Owen’s nostrils flare and he squeezes his fists, as if he can feel the sting of the needle inking me onto him. “What’d you have in mind?” he chokes out.
I crane my neck. He’s so close, eclipsing the steam from the pan surely teetering toward burnt. I can’t find it in me to care. “I think a sage leaf sprig would suffice, since you do love using my middle name.”
“I’m not opposed. Where would you want it? Somewhere hidden? Where you’d only see it if I let you? Maybe front and center for a daily reminder of you?” He shifts. Our chests brush. Breathing is an illusion, a magic trick. I’ve never drawn in a breath in my life.

Charlie rushes to the table, her burgundy maxi dress of choice cascading behind her in a flutter. “We have a problem.”
“What do you mean by ‘we’ and ‘problem’?”
“I mean, there’s a woman in the lobby who straight up refuses to leave. She’s been here through your last three clients.”
What’s going on? Is there some retrograde I missed? Is my moon phase off?
“Please tell me it’s not the sa—”
“No, thank god. It’s not her. But she says she won’t leave until she talks to you.”
“What is in the air?” I groan, throwing my head back. Am I going to have to get security or something?
“She seems normal, at least. Hopefully, after you talk to her, she’ll just…leave.”
“Did she say why she needed to talk to me?”
“Yeah, she detailed the entire conversation she wanted to have with you before I whisked back here in a panic. No, you dummy, she refuses to say more than three words to me,” Charlie whisper-screams. She runs her talons through her thick, black hair, strands catching under the loosening crystals.
Pushing up from my chair, I adjust my skirt, the elastic striking my skin with a grounding smack. “Alright.”
The early evening light casts the shop in an amber glow, rainbow reflections from the crystals transforming my favorite place into a kaleidoscope. I scan across the variety of tables Charlie, Elliot, and I thrifted when cobbling this place together, fondness spreading through my chest. Then my eyes land on a woman I’ve never seen before. At least, I think I haven’t? She’s decked out in head-to-toe color. Her ice-blonde hair is short and curled, almost 50s-style, and she looks about my age, maybe a little older. But something about her seems familiar in the oddest sense of the word.
