Watching this unfold is like watching the Irish government and tech leadership in their own form of AI psychosis or emperors new clothes. Completely divorced from what the general public, civil society orgs, arts & cultural orgs are saying / shouting.

Where does the “it’s not x, it’s y” come from? It’s not only training data: LLMs are trained to use language to arrive at “answers.” Whatever we’re incentivizing and disincentivizing in our use of language when we resist “sounding like AI” has big implications for students, and for human thought.

There’s a real issue with not building on the expertise and tools that already exist in the country and just developing “new” things, often only in consultation with industry. I’ve been so surprised by the lack of consultation with people & institutions who are experts in the area.

Brilliant read and journalism from @elaineburke.bsky.social here. Also why are govt developing these courses with industry when some of Irelands research centres have been rolling out literacy and public engagement courses for AI for years? 🤔 like @discussai.bsky.social

In the sector I work in, Science Gallery was one of the biggest employers. And it could do this for the same reason that 'sustainable business model' is an inaccurate framing for somewhere like this - because our work supported scientific research in and beyond the university.
