“The climate emergency kills,” he said on Monday. “And that’s why it’s not enough to address the consequences, which we do; what we have to do is reduce its causes, anticipate its effects, and, consequently, better prepare our country to protect people’s lives.”

Lockdowns showed that states can pour massive resources into making the politically impossible happen quickly, the public will accept huge changes if they understand why they're needed, and that we should listen to scientists. Something to remember when it comes to action on climate change.

Strongly support this move from my excellent colleague. The reality is that Twitter / X does push misinformation, abuse and racism, and we all know it. While we both support colleagues to make their own choices, Twitter / X is not the country, and there are lots of ways to engage with voters.

‘Basically you’re trapped’: UK postgraduates burdened with double loan debt
Calls for reform to student loan system as those studying for a master’s can be left with ‘a life tax’ Whether to pursue a master’s degree was not really a choice for Francesca Peters. Fresh from an undergraduate degree in biochemistry in 2020, she had set her sights on securing her dream job. There was a catch, however. The only route into her chosen field was further study – and more debt. She had finished university with more than £60,000 in student debt but another loan to fund her master’s meant this spiralled to £77,000. “It just feels like a life tax,” she says. “Because I’m never going to pay it off.” Continue reading...

It is extremely important that Labour understands that the movement of voters between Lab and Ref was not the crucial factor, it was consolidation of the anti-Ref vote and Lab voters turning out in droves. Otherwise Burnham will make the same mistakes as Starmer in targeting only one set of voters.
