1963 Lake Tahoe Airport Postcard . #LakeTahoe #Airport #Postcard #Lockheed #Constellation #Aviation #Travel #Avgeek #Ephemera
Vintage color postcard photograph of Lake Tahoe Airport in California, circa 1963, showing a large four-engine Lockheed Constellation passenger aircraft parked on the airport apron. The aircraft has a white upper fuselage, a red lower fuselage, and three distinctive vertical tail fins. Several smaller light aircraft are parked around the airfield, including a helicopter visible in the background to the right. A low, single-story airport terminal building with a long row of windows and a light-colored roof stands beside the apron. Numerous mid-century automobiles, station wagons, and vans are parked along the road in front of the terminal, illustrating the airport's roadside setting. A person wearing a red top stands near the terminal entrance. Tall light poles rise above the paved aircraft parking area. In the foreground, a paved access road curves past rocks, shrubs, and flowering plants, including bright red flowers. Beyond the airport, a dense belt of evergreen trees stretches across the landscape, with the forested Sierra Nevada mountains rising behind it under a clear blue sky. The scene captures the small regional airport's mid-century appearance, with its compact terminal, general aviation activity, and mountainous surroundings.

Northwest Airlines Electra Minneapolis - St Paul Airport Postcard . #NorthwestAirlines #Minneapolis #Airport #Avgeek #Travel #Aviation @northwestairlines.bsky.social @airportarchitecture.byerussell.com
A vintage color postcard-style photograph titled “Hello From Minnesota’s TWIN CITIES” shows an airliner parked at a terminal at what appears to be Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport.

The upper left corner contains the printed greeting “Hello From Minnesota’s” in dark blue cursive lettering, followed by “TWIN CITIES” in large red capital letters. The photograph occupies most of the card below and behind the title.

In the foreground, a large Northwest Airlines passenger aircraft is parked at the gate. The aircraft is viewed from the front-left side, with its nose facing toward the lower left of the image. It has a white fuselage with a broad blue band around the forward cabin and a red stripe running horizontally along the fuselage. The aircraft has a rounded nose, cockpit windows, and a row of passenger windows extending toward the rear. The tail, partially visible at the far left edge, is painted red and white. The aircraft appears to be a four-engine turboprop, with large propellers and engine nacelles mounted beneath the wings.

Several pieces of ground-service equipment surround the aircraft. Green baggage or cargo carts are positioned beside the forward portion of the aircraft, while a mobile stairway or service platform is visible near the nose. Additional equipment and carts are positioned beneath and alongside the aircraft. Several airport workers and passengers are standing on the ramp around the aircraft. A small group of passengers, some carrying or pulling luggage, is walking across the apron toward or away from the terminal.

Behind the aircraft is a distinctive mid-century airport terminal building. The terminal has a long, elevated structure with a repeating series of tall vertical windows and narrow structural columns. Along the roofline is a striking repeating pattern of steep, triangular or peaked roof sections, giving the building a highly distinctive sawtooth-like appearance. The terminal is elevated above the ground-level roadway and service area, with vehicles and airport equipment visible underneath the building.

The lower foreground includes the tops of additional airport ground-service equipment. At the right is a large dark circular piece of equipment with the word “NORTHWEST” printed prominently across it in white lettering. The equipment partially obscures the bottom of the scene.

The sky is bright blue with scattered white clouds. Strong sunlight creates long shadows across the concrete ramp, suggesting the photograph was taken during the morning or afternoon. The image has the slightly faded, soft appearance and saturated colors characteristic of a mid-20th-century commercial postcard.

Visible text: “Hello From Minnesota’s TWIN CITIES.” The ground equipment in the foreground is marked “NORTHWEST.”

1958 Municipal Airport Administration Building, Sioux City Iowa Postcard with a Braniff DC-3. . #SiouxCity #Iowa #Airports #Avgeek #Travel #Aviation #AirportArchitecture #Braniff #DC3
Vintage color postcard showing the Municipal Airport Administration Building in Sioux City, Iowa, with a Braniff Airways Douglas DC-3 parked on the apron in the foreground. The postcard's printed caption in the upper-left corner reads “Municipal Airport Administration Building Sioux City, Iowa.”

The airport administration building is a long, low brick structure with a distinctive tall, rectangular control tower rising from its center. The tower is several stories high and has horizontal bands of large windows at each level. At the top is an enclosed control room with windows on all sides and an open observation platform or railing above it. The lower portion of the building has extensive rows of windows facing the apron.

In the foreground, a Braniff Airways DC-3 is parked immediately in front of the terminal. The aircraft is a twin-engine, propeller-driven airliner with a polished metallic fuselage and dark blue, red, and white Braniff livery. The words “BRANIFF AIRWAYS” are visible along the fuselage, and the Braniff logo appears on the vertical tail. The aircraft's nose is cropped by the right edge of the postcard, while its left wing extends prominently across the image. Both engines and their large propellers are visible, along with the main landing gear. A second aircraft is partially visible behind the DC-3 at the far right.

Several small figures stand near the terminal entrance and aircraft, while a few pieces of ground equipment are visible around the apron. The foreground is a broad concrete aircraft parking area, with the terminal and control tower immediately behind it.

The image presents a particularly good view of the mid-century relationship between the airport terminal and air traffic control facilities, with the control tower incorporated directly into the administration building rather than standing separately. The presence of a Braniff DC-3 places the scene firmly in the era of postwar piston-engine airline service, before the widespread introduction of jet airliners.

1950 Buffalo Airport New York Postcard . #Buffalo #NewYork #Airports #AirportArchitecture #Avgeek #Travel #History #Airplanes
Vintage color postcard depicting an aerial view of Buffalo Municipal Airport, Buffalo, New York, identified by the printed caption at the upper left: “60—Buffalo Municipal Airport, Buffalo, N.Y.” The illustration provides a detailed view of the airport terminal, apron, aircraft, automobiles, and crowds of passengers and spectators.

The main terminal complex occupies the right half of the image. It is a large multi-story building constructed primarily of light-colored masonry with dark red-brown roofs and extensive rows of windows. A prominent circular or polygonal control tower rises above the central portion of the building. The tower has tall windows surrounding an enclosed observation room and a dark, projecting roof. Numerous people are gathered on the terminal's upper terraces and along the apron in front of the building, giving the scene the appearance of a busy mid-century passenger airport.

Several American Airlines aircraft are parked on the large concrete apron to the left and foreground of the terminal. The aircraft are four-engine, propeller-driven airliners with polished silver-colored fuselages and red-and-white markings. One aircraft in the upper left is parked broadside to the viewer, while another is positioned near the lower left. A third American Airlines aircraft occupies the foreground, apparently taxiing or being maneuvered on the apron. Ground-service equipment, including small baggage or service carts and vehicles, is positioned around the aircraft.

A large number of tiny illustrated figures are visible throughout the terminal area. Crowds line the edge of the aircraft apron behind a metal safety railing, while other passengers and airport visitors are gathered near the terminal entrances and along the sidewalks. Numerous automobiles are parked in rows on the upper-right side of the image, suggesting a substantial automobile parking area serving the airport.

The postcard presents Buffalo Municipal Airport as a busy postwar American passenger airport, combining a substantial terminal building and control tower with multiple large four-engine airliners, ground-service equipment, automobiles, and crowds of travelers. The bottom-right corner carries the printed code “OC-H402.”
