you probably won’t be happy to hear that that mirrors my own relationship with this gig and i’m *already* on adderall

And naturally, even in the first chapter, you already see the themes and motifs that his anime scripts explore. The “Who am I” question being brought up is no surprise, but there’s also a bit of the “art is Different in person” motif explored in the Smeargle episode.

The writing (at least in jp) has the feel of a friendly old man reading you a bedtime story, so the narration can go from pajama puns to wistful musings of a single mother who gave up on her dreams to explaining the Genesis story of creation and you can't help but love it.

Read the first chapter of Pocket Monsters The Animation, Takeshi Shudou's novelization of the anime. I might have failed to mention this before, but Shudou is a *deranged* (affectionate) writer. He'll go on overly-detailed tangents nobody asked for and write alien dialogue that'd make Tomino proud.

cover of the Pocket Monsters: The Animation novel, vol. 1.
Written by Takeshi Shudo, Illustrations by Sayuri Ichiishi.

Satoshi was looking up the word capture on his computer's dictionary.
And chose “get” as the most commonly used word among Pokémon Trainers.
The dictionary gave the following definition for get.
“Get ＜Obsolete (Commonly used in the past) Etymology... get... English word＞ ... Capture, obtain. Colloquialism for trapping. In the past was used when a man obtained a girl (make something yours), girls also used in regards to obtaining a guy, by the end of the 20th century, its meaning had shifted to only obtaining items, such as when buying them... Nowadays it is no longer part of common vernacular. An exception to this is usage among Pocket Monster (Pokémon) Trainers, where it remains in use in regards to the capture of Pokémon.
＜Example 1... “Krab get (Krab is a species of river crab Pokémon.) another example is “Koiking get (Koiking is a fish Pokémon predominantly made of bones and scales.) ... To obtain a dull Pokémon to catch. On one hand... a waste of effort. Example 2... “I came close to getting Mew (Mew is a legendary Pokémon whose existence is unconfirmed)” ... To obtain a Pokémon whose existence is unconfirmed. On the other hand... unbelievable fortune. As such it is considered a dangerous (high risk) operation. Something that involves considerable effort.＞

But on the day he got his computer, the illusions he had about his father and grandfather were shattered. And the following occurred...
Hanako lowered her head as she spoke to little Satoshi.
“Sorry. I lied to you...”
Hanako spoke to Satoshi whose jaw hung wide open.
“Lied...”
“Surreal trainers. Beyond reality, throwing logic to the curb, super real, surpassing reality... It's all lies... I give up.”
Satoshi was the one giving up.
Hanako asked the following.
“When you start using your computer, you're going to go online...”
“Yeah.”
Satoshi nodded.
“And of course, the internet has information regarding Pokémon, so you're going to try and learn more about your dad and grandpa.”
“Yeah. That's right.”
“But, you won't find anything. Probably.”
“Why not?”
“Because I lied...”
“Eh...”
“It's not a lie that dad and grandpa did try to become Pokémon Trainers... That's the truth... It's absolute fact that they left on a journey...”
“Yeah.”
“But... To say that they had any success as trainers...”
“Yeah.”
“It's a lie. Probably.”

Given that it's tying Eternal so strongly to the samurai era, I feel like going down any other route would betray the themes it's trying to set up. After decades of Gundam merchandising, I think Bamco's fine with the marketing not necessarily lining up with the art.

As for playing Eternal, the Bakumatsu era comes right before the Meiji restoration, so I assume the intent is to have Eternal eventually treated as a thing of the past. I'm curious about what direction they'll take Zetsu, he doesn't seem like he's thrilled about keeping Eternal matches a thing.

Vrains had the speed duel format (even if it was functionally different than either Duel Links or paper), and Duema Win had episodes where he played zero banlist and draft, but Zekkai might be the first to make multiple formats so central to its story.

to be clear i’m measuring by shounen jump subtext standards and wouldn’t expect anything above sasunaru level at best, and the handful of misogynist jabs by some side characters don’t engender confidence either way. but if nothing else, i’m at least enjoying the mothercon shedar side dish.

It’s like Vanguard in the sense that it *does* have netplay in the form of a full-price retail game on Steam (Battle Spirits Crossover), but not only does it not support english, it was also riddled with unplayable bugs at launch and I can’t imagine they’ve all been fixed.

Maybe it's a little excessive to create a new rotation format for your game and liken the non-rotation format to "losing means you fucking die," but in all fairness, no TCG has a non-rotation format that isn't a straight up bloodsport.

The historical fiction setup in Zekkai no Ku really is a smart adaptation to the time constraints of a late night time slot. As long as the viewer knows enough historical context to fill in the blanks, you can set up a vibrant world and make thematic connections with minimal exposition.

Fun Fact: the English text's ability to use "One Slime" (singular) and "Seven Slimes" (plural) is pretty revolutionary. Japanese doesn't distinguish between singular and plural, so extra programming likely would've been needed to allow this—a luxury some translations still don't have to this day.

Takenaka's solo KA episode #02 is a masterclass

it is frankly a Lot of things these days because it’s so rare for people to have standards against machine translations anymore, but at least there’s an intermediate step when you’re outside of X: The Everything App of not having groklations on by default.

110

airco @airco.bsky.social · 11/10/2026

going from “i know people here don’t use twitter anymore” into posting a machine translation that completely butchers the nuance of the original interview text and then taking every word at face value is. Well, it’s a good demostration of why people here don’t use twitter anymore.

if you can read jp you should definitely read the interviews going around in that and not the groklation bc it's clearly just sugarcoated "we're making an anime with 12/24/whatever episodes, here are a couple ideas we juggled for how to make that possible and coherent" lol

yeah, zero believers having older sensibilities (by narou standards) coming in clutch here

000

airco @airco.bsky.social · 11/10/2026

and that’s with the adaptation showing his thoughts and covering the gist of his characterization pretty well. but hey, i avoid narou stuff for a reason. :V

010

airco @airco.bsky.social · 11/10/2026

the start definitely feels like it's setting up another petty revenge fantasy, but Makoto's generally chill enough to not hold stuff against people, so I think it avoids the absolute worst case scenario.

020

(The most positive things I can say about the series is that it mostly tries to be an actual story instead of an I'm The Strongest power fantasy or a cynical, misogynist revenge fantasy against every woman who didn't worship him. Which is high praise by narou-kei standards.)
