Some Australian research funding is now a lottery. And that’s actually good news
Leaving some funding decisions up to luck can save everybody time and effort – and help understand what the funding actually does.

Need more time to get work done? Have you thought of FAMT? www.ft.com/content/0291...
One senior leader at a UK sports organisation, fed up with being dragged from one meeting to the next, blocked out the last Tuesday of every month in her calendar to work for hours at a time, uninterrupted - labelling it in her diary as
"FAMT"
Her colleagues assumed she was busy with some sort of "management team" or
"football association". She eventually confessed this was in fact an abbreviation of
"Fuck All Meetings Tuesday". To her surprise, they thought it was a great idea.

A promotional image from the Australian Bureau of Statistics encouraging Census completion. The image features illustrations of a Census Household Form, a microphone, and the silhouettes of the Spice Girls, and the following lyrics:

Yo, I'll tell you what I want, what I really, really want
So tell us what you want, what you really, really want

I wanna, (ha) I wanna, (ha) I wanna, (ha) I wanna, (ha) I wanna really, really, really wanna complete the Census on behalf of my household, ahh

If you wanna be our lovers,
you gotta do your Census form (Gotta do your Census form)
On the 11 August, data never ends
If you wanna be our lovers, go and tell your friends
Completing is too easy, but that's the way it is

One of the common cited reasons is that panels increase accountability. There may be some merit in this, as it's embarrassing to turn up to a panel meeting unprepared, but I have seen it. I think coping with rejection is a big part of it.
