🗣️ New preprint! @jialin-lin-zhou.bsky.social Western samples tend to think of a "person" as a man. How persistent is this? Striking evidence from two novel groups begins to answer this question; see below for findings from the matrilineal Mosuo and from an age-diverse mainstream Chinese sample ⬇️

Thank you for this Josh—very kind! Worth noting our ideas have deep philosophical roots in de Beauvoir's account of woman as 'the other.' Adding to her philosophical claim about wider culture, we show this is a feature of social cognition, empirically measurable in how people think about categories

People seem to represent men and women in a conceptually balanced manner: for example, seeing women as warm (not agentic) and men as agentic (not warm). Emerging evidence, however, suggests people mig...

American universities have given the country prosperity and security. The Trump administration’s attack on academic freedom endangers all of that.

it's an interesting/troubling finding if it replicates. it seems to me like a potentially unique form of 'othering' given the primacy of gender in attributions of humanity (ala Ashely Martin's work)

male and female names that are common among self-identified Asian people were relatively unassociated with male and female gender concepts (e.g., "man" "woman") relative to White and Hispanic names in a supplementary analysis this was much stronger for East Asian than South Asian names

I made my first 3D plot! I was extremely proud of myself. I think it visualizes the clustering differences between red and blue better than the 2D plot. My (non-psych) partner shrugs and says they look the same 🥲 3D's better right? ps. Can you see which one is (sig) more clustered, red or blue?
