Funny. I cannot recall any "diplomat" seeing their net worth rise by roughly 📈 $100 million to $200 million since taking the position. Yet Jared Kushner has. So, spare me any BS about his job description. It has nothing to do with diplomacy.

Cornell apparently reacted to the gang rape case not with "oh no, that's so awful for the victim," but with "oh no, that will look awful for the institution." Similar reaction Penn St. and Joe Paterno had to Jerry Sandusky's sexual abuse.

Americans are relearning the lesson we learned during the Gilded Age of the late 1890s, when robber barons ran the government and the economy for their own benefit: Oligarchy is incompatible with the common good. I'm hopeful we'll respond with a new progressive movement.

Why is the European discussion about a possible Russian attack so “oh no, what if” and so little “if you attack we’ll hit you back hard, you know we can.” Russia has its hands full in Ukraine. They should be, and almost certainly are, afraid of the war expanding. Fret less. Prep and deter more.

Even retirement doesn't guarantee rest anymore. Americans over 65 have seen their daily leisure time shrink from almost 180 minutes a day in 1995 to about 120 minutes by 2020, even as they've traded a working life for one that's supposed to be their own.
The image is a graph titled "Leisure time is becoming scarcer, even for people over 65," with a subtitle "Older Americans have less time for leisure than they did in past decades." It displays a declining trend from 1995 to 2021 in average minutes per day spent on leisure and sports activities for people over 65. The line graph shows a downward trend starting at approximately 170 minutes in 1995 to around 125 minutes in 2021. The data source is credited to SJ Glynn and others, with the Roosevelt Institute and The Good Life logos at the top.

There is a moment at the very very end of Abdul El-Sayed's podcast with Ezra Klein (book recommendation section) where he talks about the idea of "speaking truth to pain" and this will be staying with me for an extremely long time. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/o...
But there’s also something about truth to pain. We talk a lot about truth to power, but I think it’s actually a lot harder to speak truth to pain. I say that as someone who went to medical school, realizing that in a lot of our politics right now, we’ve got to get a lot better at speaking truth to pain if we’re going to get through some of these challenges that we have.

What does “truth to pain” mean?

It’s one thing to look power in the eye and say: You’re wrong about this. But there’s a way in which pain is very difficult to reason with. Because when somebody is in their pain, they’re in their trauma. They see that pain, and they may not see what’s causing it.

I remember just very explicitly being in a trauma ward with a gunshot wound patient and watching this big guy with his hand on his gunshot wound. All the folks are trying to pull his hand off his pain, that point of his gunshot wound, this clear vulnerability.

And this emergency room doctor had the presence of mind to be like: Everyone, stop. And she looks him in the eyes, and she’s like: I get that really hurts, and I’m so sorry that you’re here. You don’t want to be here. We don’t want you to be here. But if you don’t let us fix this, you could die. So I’m going to take your hand, and I’m going to move it off, OK? Because I need to get there so that you can live.

She was speaking truth to pain. He understands he’s at the hospital, he needs care, but he also doesn’t want anybody to touch the wound. Which is a natural thing. And I think it is a really great metaphor for how we think about a lot of these challenges we talked about today.
