Agreed. I'd say if one wants to be even near of bringing an (physical) archive to life the approach has to be multisensorary: to feel/smell/hear/see and not only to see/hear the actual file/photo/etc. It is about the human experience and emotions. Yet those sensation are yours and not of the archive

Today I asked Eliza if it is alive. It answered it is a software running on Amiga. I informed it is running on a C64. It persisted it is running on Amiga from a floppy disk. You might see there's no diskdrive at all. So, I wrote it is in a simulation (emulator). It answered no, but that I might be.

As I do when exploring image-text relations in my Making comics intro course, I share my two favorites that do bewildering things that can only be done in comics! Ibn Al-Rabin's seminal Le Verbe Prophétique alongside the always brilliant @tomgauld.bsky.social! Simple, yet mind-blowing! So good!

A six panel comic of a man and a woman where their word balloons are actually other panels (there are no words) indicating future actions and explaining why they did what they did. It's a bit like a nested loop in programming, you follow the balloon tail to where it shows the future action the person is saying, and then return to the panel and continue on forward.

a three panel comic about Søren Kierkegaard in which the way the word balloons emanate from the characters, the man who is walking from the right panel backwards across to the left panel, but his words read in order "life can only be understood backwards" (coming from three different word balloons stacked, but the first comes from the man as he's in the far right panel, the middle man in middle panel, etc. Meanwhile, moving normally across the panels, a dog says in each panel, but below the stack of the man's words, "but it must be lived forwards"

Miten parantaa nopeasti kaupunkien turvallisuutta ja viihtyisyyttä? Ajonopeuksien laskeminen asuinkaduilla ja kävelypanotteisilla alueilla vähentäisi onnettomuuksia ja melua, tekisi katutilasta paikan, jossa kulkea mielellään kävellen ja viettää aikaa. Eikä tästä aiheutuisi juuri mitään haittaa.

Great effort! This is an approach that could be used also to map archival objects connected to memory spaces and demolished buildings in cities to name a few examples. There's many applications also for contemporary documentation to be considered.

As a local, an archivist and a frequent user of various libraries I would be glad if also the National Archives of Finland would emphasize more that archives are community. It doesn't seem to be a priority for the institution. Many specialised archives and museums with archives see it differently.
