Anyway we are now looking up state dinosaurs and are betrayed. What the fuck. Also a bunch of states don’t have a state dinosaur?

Early voting and not stressing about it is the best. Also as someone who phone banks they update the lists daily and you are one less person to call.

Roommate is like, you’ve ruined everyone’s algorithms, all we get is Frankenstein content now. I apologize. She’s like, you’re not sorry. And she’s right, I’m not sorry. Me and Victor, dragging our households after us w/o their consent.

Everyone says they’re open to feedback from the resurrected corpse of William Shakespeare, but just wait. You’ll get tired of his mummified, judgmental ass eventually.

This was such a fun conversation! Wickhills is such a cool book to get to ask a million world build questions about and listening to Premee talk about writing is one of my favorite things.

For years my parents were like are you scared FOR the mermaid? No Are you scared OF the mermaid? Also no In retrospect I think it was social anxiety. I was not fucking prepared for a convo with a mermaid that had just come up through the shower drain. There is no script for that.

Did NOT like it when they opened the closet at the beginning of Labyrinth and it was full of little guys. I was like oh I’m not watching this. Also some movie where there was a mermaid in a tank & for years I was scared that a mermaid would come up the shower drain (could not tell you why)

Top tv shows but make it about birds: #9 Birbs With Enthusiasm (Great Egret chicks excited about something) #birds 🌿
Three large white egret chicks stand in a big nest. Two face the camera with their beaks open, looking like they’re exclaiming loudly over something.

Currently rereading Romantic Outlaws, the joint bio of Mary Wollestonecraft and Mary Shelley but the problem is I’ve entered the point in their lives where it’s just, like, straight bummers and it’s not great for morale.

I have heard it bc there’s a bardcore cover and my partner was explaining the OG song to me so I looked it up. (She had not heard it either, just knew about it)

Like I have so many friends who have already lost jobs and so many who will and so many whose kids are just fucked. And it’s probably a done deal but maaaaybe something happens in November that’s enough to change it. The speed at which the state has turned against public ed is honestly unreal

Given that the school district I grew up and worked for for six years is almost certainly getting destroyed next year unless there’s a radical shift, I super try not to think about it.

I worked at a fancy school for two years with a free salad bar, so I made myself get the tomatoes every day and eat them first. I don’t know that I’d say I *like* them now, but I will occasionally eat them voluntarily. Not the big sliced ones tho, those just taste like sadness.

No one is concerned. The general consensus is that if they see a snake they will simply leave. I can’t even blame this on growing up in Washington bc roommate is also from Texas.

Literary fiction is coming. It is going to revolutionize the economy. We know that China has already got a start on literary fiction. We can’t afford to be left out of the literary fiction economy. Think of your kids. They might already be engaging with literary fiction.

My partner and I were discussing this after the AI geese (bc their hair was so much lusher than his) and came to the conclusion that some of it is maybe that he just looks so unwell that having his hair look better would draw attention to how bad he himself looks?

Thrilled to discover, via an AI spam email, that I am apparently the author of M. A. Carrick’s Eye of Leviathan. How cool that I wrote such a great book. Pity that I’m apparently not marketing it correctly.

Not super gifable and not my real answer but Boyhood came out that year and it’s set in the exact place where I grew up and I’m the exact same age as the older sister (w/ a younger brother) and wow that was trippy as fuck.

Sharing a bathroom with Penny is challenging because her favorite hobby is staring at herself in the mirror with the lights off. She’ll do it for ages and if you turn the light on she gets SO SAD.

I read the Goblin Emperor right at the beginning of grad school, as I was starting student teaching, and I could feel myself imprinting on it in real time. It was a book about being overwhelmed and trying your best at a new job and it was so exactly the thing I needed in the moment.

When I was in high school I got a Netflix dvd description and used it to watch Lost and I was telling some adult at church about it and she was like “wow what a waste of time, do you know how many TED talks you could watch instead?” And tbh I think that is the primary TED talk vibe.

Tracks. Whereas I think this was probably in the first five fics anyone recommended to me? Like maybe the first three? I can’t imagine why it didn’t get me into fanfiction. This actually is contextualizing a lot of my childhood lol

Think it’s gotta be generational bc I never really read fic, was not really in online HP fandom spaces, & def recognize this fic. I think due to IRL references/recs. I do not enjoy the way we all have to be forever chased by the worst excesses of our childhood cultures, now somehow worse.

Also a useful strategy bc often it’s in line w/ the way we’ve been socialized, so it’s a good strat in high stress situations where it’s easy to fall into old patterns.

Often when I hear other teachers talk about using AI, they aren’t talking about outsourcing grunt work so much as outsourcing student work. Formatting, drawing, cutting etc. that I would usually have my kids do. Fine motor practice, processing time, etc. that is good for kids IMO.

I’ve definitely seen that. I’ve also seen pple who haven’t met those goals & want to lash out. Real walkable communities feel so impossible that wanting it feels like an extravagance. Also easier to blame pedestrians & bikes for how much driving in a city sucks.

A. E. Lanier @aelanier.bsky.social · 11/08/2026
Tbh I think a lot of it is denial. Living in a walkable place is objectively so much better and also inaccessible to a lot of pple and so they have to reject it vehemently. Once you see the hell of car dependency it consumes you. Better to hate walkability.
