The DC Council passed the first reading of the Filter Act. This assault on DC voter initiatives makes them nearly impossible to address complex issues. The law violates the Home Rule Charter in multiple ways but mainly by limiting citizens rights to draft laws with its single subject restriction.

I have switched parties from Dem to Independent here in DC because the local Dems are mostly bought off by the restaurants and landlords and to that end have passed a bill weakening the effectiveness of ballot measures. The DC Council is a group of arrogant lawmakers who don’t get that anyone can write a law that’s the whole idea of a ballot initiative and they’re trying to take that away and make it so we have to go through them. There’s gonna be major fallout from today’s vote.

The FAIR Act is primarily a backlash to Initiative 83, which overwhelmingly approved ranked-choice voting and semi-open primaries in DC. I don't support every initiative that has been proposed in DC, but sabotaging the process for all initiatives and referenda is anti-democratic and anti-Home Rule.

The Home Rule Act gives DC residents the right to propose ballot initiatives and referenda. Today, the Council will vote on a bill to gut that right by imposing dozens of new restrictions, requirements, legal barriers, and delays to effectively block any initiative before it reaches your ballot.
