I promise, this is the last time I’ll do this this week. But I don’t have many other options—plus, it makes me want to keep fighting, despite the collapse of the freelance landscape. On Patreon or Ko-fi, feel free to leave a tip if you enjoy my threads, ship design story, and other sci-fi antics.🖖

I am very proud of our time travel audio comedy #NightTerrace. I think it’s very good and funny, and you can get it here: nightterrace.com I don’t plug it often because we’ve been struggling to finish a third season for many years. But I’d love more folks to enjoy the first two seasons.

‘The greatest ambassador for life on Earth’: Tributes paid to David Attenborough on his 100th birthday
Naturalist says he has been ‘overwhelmed by greetings’ as milestone is marked with event at Royal Albert Hall David Attenborough said he had been “completely overwhelmed by birthday greetings” for his centenary on Friday and thanked wellwishers “most sincerely”. The naturalist said he had hoped to celebrate his 100th birthday quietly. Instead, the milestone will be marked with a live event at the Royal Albert Hall broadcast on BBC One, featuring music from his programmes as well as stories and reflections from public figures and leading advocates for the natural world. In a recorded audio message shared on Thursday night, Attenborough said: “I had rather thought that I would celebrate my 100th birthday quietly, but it seems that many of you have had other ideas. I'm an iNat fan, and a regular user for personal and research goals. This is the first I've heard of this project. It's an admirable goal, and an important goal that can potentially advance biodiversity knowledge and conservation efforts. But I think there are a few issues to think about here... 🧵

It's not quite #InverteFest yet, but since this is basically the whole premise of InverteFest, I'll make an exception and share it early. Go find cool bugs, have fun with friends, and contribute to the conservation of those cool bugs.

Elon Musk does not want you to donate to Wikipedia, which is itself a good reason to donate, but the much better reason is that it's Wikipedia. Just donated again last night.

Happy Wrensday! @drkyliesoanes.bsky.social & I are in the middle of a Melbourne-wide #urban bird bioblitz this week, with citizen scientists across several local councils conducting 15-min "Wren Watches" 🌏🪶 It's exciting to see sightings coming in on iNaturalist! superbcitywrens.com/2024/11/07/m...
A male superb fairywren sits on a pale brown upright post against a blurred background of green foliage. The strong sunlight picks out the detail of his tiny, shiny head feathers, making the deep velvety dark blue under his chin shimmer. He has a black eyestripe and back of head feathers, which set off the pale blue, scale-like feathers on his forehead and cheeks. Soft brown body and a dark blue tail completes the ensemble. He is facing left, with one eye defiently looking into the camera.
