THIS REALITY AND THE NEXT

adult cozy fantasy
84,000 words

The Pitch: Longtime superheroes Aura-Man and The Diplomat are ready to retire. Together. But when revealing their new relationship to the media incites public panic and the collapse of all realities, they’re thrust into one last mission: save the multiverse from a collapse of their own making.

Comp titles: Can’t Spell Treason Without Tea (early retirement, live-in partnership); Somewhere Beyond the Sea (public expectations, defying stereotypes); Marvel Cinematic Universe (Tony/Steve dynamic, multiverse adventure); and Good Omens (partners through time, us against the world mentality)

The excerpt: Time trickled like molasses. Andres paced the hospital floor, just outside the operating room where they wouldn’t let him follow. His rage had nowhere to go but through his feet. He wished he had something or someone else to punch.
It was so, so stupid. A pack of armed men? That was who took down Aura-Man? The great Lyric Grae, who had wiped out armies of reanimated corpses, who had taken down alien snakes and stopped the planet from getting knocked off its axis. He’d survived deep space, the depths of the ocean, and seventy days alone in the desert. Lyric Grae had endured so much in his life of service to the world; he did not deserve to go down like this.

Andres blamed himself.

Just an early tease, the first time Lyric and Andres are recruited by their sorcerer colleague! #RevPit #RevPitWaiting

I’m hardly in the shape to fight anything,” he protested. “I can barely walk without help!”
“That’s fine, you won’t need to,” Emeric said, gesturing for him to come again. Lyric sighed and walked toward the great gaping hole.
When he stepped through, he expected to appear inside of the sorcerer’s tower. Instead, he found himself inside Andres’ living room.
Andres himself was naked, a towel wrapped around his waist and a hand in his damp hair. He startled when Emeric and Lyric suddenly appeared, throwing an accusatory glare at Lyric.
“He brought me!” Lyric said quickly. “I didn’t ask to come, I swear. Tell him, Emeric!”

I decided to go with my childhood all-time, the first volume of the Chronicles of Chrestomanci by Diana Wynne Jones. I love the way the magic is whimsical and not over-explained and the way multiple universes are a major, but background feature. I wanted to live in this world. #RevPit #RevPitWaiting

Quoted text “You’re painting yourself as the villain and me as the hero. It’s not that kind of black and white. Lyric — what if it’s both of us?”

Hiya Jeni! Litten says hello too. How would you approach structures that might not align with a traditional beat sheet, or something built in parts (eg. Before the Coffee Gets Cold)? What are some of your favorite contemporary or cozy fantasies?
