The Facial Expressions of Tethys by artist Julius von Bismarck. A suspended high-sea buoy that moves in real time. Sensors on a twin buoy out in the Atlantic Ocean send live satellite data to motors inside the museum. This makes the indoor buoy copy the exact, real-time movements of the ocean waves.

could be! might be why gen z and millennials seem to be more optimistic about the economy than boomers/gen x: www.marketplace.org/story/2026/0...
marketplace.org
Why are boomers and Gen Xers more pessimistic about the economy?
It all has to do with your perspective: how much you remember what things used to cost and how far in the future you're planning.

It is odd to me that people would be comparing prices today to 2019 (almost 8 years ago!) rather than, say, two or three years ago.

Right. But that's because people compartmentalize them separately. Your salary and rent are seen by most people as the background noise to your finances that you work around, but your discretionary purchases are "real", when the reality is almost entirely reversed

the interesting thing to me is that this only came out because someone thought something he ad-libbed sounded like AI. I feel like this might lead to people self-censoring when they worry that something about their voice sounds too AI, which doesn't seem great to me

Why Aren’t There More Imax 70mm Screens for ‘The Odyssey’? variety.com/2026/film/ne...
Sources at Imax confirmed to Varietythat many of the parts needed to build these specialized film projectors "simply no longer exist." The original design files were created roughly half a century ago, but as Gelfond alludes to, they were never properly maintained. As a result, Imax no longer has a complete manufacturing blueprint — and much like the lost tribal knowledge of the Apollo-era spacecraft, very few engineers working today fully understand the systems.

Survey Design (Free Seminar) - On-Demand
Strengthen the credibility of your survey-based research with this online seminar on the foundational principles of survey design, led by Adam Berinsky of the MIT Political Experiments Research Lab. Designed for PhD students and professional researchers, the seminar explores how sampling, question wording, response options, survey mode, nonresponse, weighting, and cognitive response processes shape the validity of empirical claims. Participants will learn how to identify and avoid common sources of bias, improve questionnaire design, develop effective pretesting strategies, and integrate transparent survey design decisions into manuscripts, grant proposals, and reproducible workflows. With examples from historical polling errors and contemporary applied research, the seminar offers both conceptual depth and practical tools for producing stronger causal and descriptive inference across political science, psychology, sociology, public policy, and related fields. The seminar is delivered live via Zoom, with recordings, slides, materials, and an expert-monitored Q&A forum available for 30 days afterward, and participants receive an official Instats certificate of completion. #OnlineSurvey #PoliticalScience #Psychology #PublicPolicy #SocialSciences #Sociology #SurveyDesign #DataScience #Statistics #Research #ResearchTraining #Instats

My thought is that it might incentivize people to work with people they trust, and deter people who are tempted to use LLMs. Also, if someone is using LLMs without checking whether the citations it generates are real, hopefully that would be evident in other aspects of the paper.

I guess my thoughts (to be taken with a grain of salt since I've only read one paper) is that this project could be useful, but only if there were a thorough review process, which would involve a human author making changes. So could save time but would ultimately require trained researchers.

but something weird is going on with this event study for the parallel trends. This is something that would be easily caught by a reviewer but might not be caught by a non-expert who is only interested in the policy implications.

Read a paper (ape.socialcatalystlab.org/papers/apep_...) from Social Catalyst Lab's Project "automate policy evaluation" which seemed like a good grad school paper for a class (e.g., limited data, requires strong assumptions but a step in the right direction for a broader research project)

Women are getting most of the new jobs. What's going on with men?
Over the past year, the vast majority of new jobs have gone to women. One economist says to help men find work, we need to embrace ways to "make girly jobs appeal to manly men."

If this is true, doesn't this indicate that consumer sentiment is in fact "broken"? It implies that people aren't evaluating the economy based on their own economic conditions but on something pretty arbitrary.

If I'm not mistaken, the intuition for the price level explanation is that voters are thinking I'm pessimistic about the economy because the nominal price level is high, but I'm also able to buy more things with my income.
