We have a new publication out. Conducting a survey among around 1600 Swiss citizens living abroad, we empirically show that e-voting will reduce turnout among these non-residents if it is introduced without trust-building measures and explanations. link.springer.com/article/10.1...

It is also another test of whether European democracies respond to real pressures with pragmatic reforms - or with symbolic restrictionism that risks economic self-harm and deeper political division. 8/8

Adrian Favero @adrianfavero.bsky.social · 05/05/2026
The SVP has long pioneered this strategy, selling identity politics and "othering" as common-sense realism. The referendum is about more than limiting population numbers. A “Yes” vote would demand a radical redesign of Swiss politics, and jeopardise the bilateral agreements with the EU. 7/8

Adrian Favero @adrianfavero.bsky.social · 05/05/2026
➡️ The initiative fits a wider European pattern: right-wing populist parties using migration, housing pressure, and cost-of-living anxieties to channel frustration into anti-elite and anti-foreigner narratives. The radical right persistently presents demographic change as a national threat. 6/8

Adrian Favero @adrianfavero.bsky.social · 05/05/2026
🇪🇺🇨🇭It also matters geopolitically. The EU is Switzerland’s largest trading partner, and free movement is tied to broader bilateral agreements covering market access, transport, and legal cooperation. Any rupture could strain one of Europe’s most important economic relationships. 5/8
120
Adrian Favero @adrianfavero.bsky.social · 05/05/2026
If that proved insufficient, the SVP petition ultimately & explicitly calls for Switzerland to terminate the free movement of persons agreement with the EU. Why does it matter? Because Swiss economy depends heavily on international talent. So does healthcare, engineering, finance, and research. 4/8

Adrian Favero @adrianfavero.bsky.social · 05/05/2026
🛑 The initiative would require the government to act once the population reaches 9.5 million (it's currently 9.1 mio), including tightening immigration rules, limiting family reunification, and potentially renegotiating international agreements that drive population growth. 3/8

Adrian Favero @adrianfavero.bsky.social · 05/05/2026
Swiss voters will decide on the issue on 14 June 2026. Supporters frame it as a sustainability measure; critics see it as a far-right anti-immigration and anti-EU campaign - which it ultimately is. ⚠️ This referendum is a defining political moment for Switzerland and the EU, as I outline below. 2/8

🗳 Switzerland is set to be the first country to hold a national referendum on a concrete, binding population cap. The right-wing populist Swiss People’s Party (SVP) launched the “No to a 10 Million Switzerland” initiative to cap the country’s permanent population at 10 million by 2050. 1/8

Adrian Favero @adrianfavero.bsky.social · 15/10/2025

Adrian Favero @adrianfavero.bsky.social · 15/10/2025

Adrian Favero @adrianfavero.bsky.social · 15/10/2025
300
Adrian Favero @adrianfavero.bsky.social · 15/10/2025
110
Adrian Favero @adrianfavero.bsky.social · 15/10/2025
230
Adrian Favero @adrianfavero.bsky.social · 15/10/2025
