Lovely to see « I dropped a salad near Jaurès metro » appear in French in Lettre des Amis, the twice-yearly publication from French Quakers. The translation by Hadrien Thine and me opened up resonances that don’t feature in the original version, which appeared in « Southword » in June.
The text of the poem in French and English, together with a contextualising note. The title page of the summer 2026 issue of Lettre des Amis.

Most likely the chess explanation. When a king is ‘in check’, it has limited options for defensive movement. When the king is under attack and there are no options left for defensive movement, it’s checkmate and the game is over.

1/2 ‘I Dropped A Salad Near Jaurès Metro’ appears in the current issue of ‘Southword’. The poem raises questions of what we can do in the face of others’ deprivation, even if our contribution might seem like a drop in the ocean, even if we’re left feeling frustrated that we can’t do more.

If you're in London, why not come to St Martin in the Fields for some poems and exquisite choral music on Monday night? It's free and everything...
Crossing The Bar: An Evening of music and words with poet Jay Hulme
Monday 20 July, 6pmJoin members of the St Martin’s Choral Scholars and the Trinity Church, New York Choral Scholars, together with poet Jay Hulme, for an evening of music and poetry exploring themes of the saints and pilgrimage.

The event will last approximately one hour with no interval. Admission is free and all are welcome.

Often to be found high on a crumbling spiral staircase, or alone on a long walk, Jay Hulme is (so the biographies often say) an award winning transgender poet, theologian, speaker, and educator. With a special interest in queer rights, nature, and theology, Jay’s work engages particularly with ideas of faith, place, and identity. Here there are no boundaries, as he intertwines the urban and pastoral; the sacred and mundane; the likely and the impossible.

This fascinating essay conveys a respectful, open curiosity about the practice and with the practitioners while offering the reader interesting interpretations. If I was still an academic, I’d be showing this to students as an example of an ideal stance within certain forms of qualitative research.

Reread The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. Deliciously odd. Despite contentions to the contrary, it contains ample context & analysis but inveigles them, often ironised, efficiently in a compact narrative. Comic & alarming by turns, a picture of mangled potential, eccentricity, egotism, awakening & abuse
