This is wild - somebody did a deep dive into the real stories behind this famous XKCD: sheets.works/data-viz/hol...
an XKCD comic showing a precariously assembled tower of blocks. much is labelled "all modern digital infrastructure." a thin leg down at the bottom is labelled "A project some random person in Nebraska has been thanklessly maintaining since 2003."

Yup. Writers are (unfortunately) cheap. Not only ads, but also every film set before about 1970 should hire some grumpy old fart writer to give the script a once over and remove all the anachronisms and grammatical errors.

If I worked for Andy Burnham I'd reply "Yes, Prime Minister" to most of his remarks but every so often I'd say "Don't be disgusting, Jerry" to keep him on his toes.

the reason “AI will create so much abundance we will have a utopian society” rhetoric falls so flat is that the people building it will never, ever share their bounty unless it is taken from them and we all know it

Pensioners refusing to downsize is good for younger families buying houses. Downsising drives up the price of smaller houses.

We should also own the copyright in our own DNA (explicitly shared - half with parents and siblings; quarter with grandchildren etc; below, say, 1/16 the right stops).

Not sure about this. Being able to say, "A.I., book us a table at that place you found that we went to about a month ago for seven thirty," seems like a reasonable use.

Maybe. But the big thing about releasing the source free is that, though the lawyers may go after the originator (to what purpose if their total assets add up to $568.55, incidentally?), that source can never be closed off.

Happy tenth anniversary to the time the Reading Chronicle didn’t know what a plant room is.
Crane disruption
AN enormous crane that will lift a room full of plants into a 14 sto-rey building will close town cen-tre roads in October.
Station Road and Garrard Street will be shut and Friar Street and Blagrave Street reversed between 5am October 15 and 5am October 17. The temporary measures will allow contractors working on the Thames Tower to install a 500 tonne crane that will put a prefabricated plant room onto the roof of the building.
