I think about this emphasis of relentlessness from Garfinkel (1996) a lot these days: "every society's...practical achievement, being everywhere, always, only, exactly and entirely members' work, with no time out, and with no possibility of evasion, hiding out, passing, postponement, or buyouts"

"Kind of coincidental he went down to stop the clock" Hey Kirk, you could see on the replay that the quarterback got sacked directly onto his ankle. I know Ohio State isn't playing and Arch is on the sideline, but could you still maybe watch the game you're covering?

This is what has always driven me crazy about endless, deferential reporting about The Market. What's the difference between The Market and The Mob? Cops don't rush the floor and kick traders' teeth in when The Market acts up.

When I read someone's profile and it's rapid-fire double-digit things about them I react like when you go to take a cake out and the whole thing moves. Like, oh no, you're not ready to be out here *at all*.

As a scholar of spread-out social interactions (often among strangers) I had an exciting moment at the supermarket where a cyclist unwittingly lost their satchel and you could see the unspoken calculus between 4 strangers around that area of the carpark as we clearly considered what to do about it.

There have always been humans who thought: 1) The world will end soon 2) It will happen in a cool, exciting way 3) It’ll happen to me personally 4) I’ll be a martyred prophet, or a warlord, or otherwise special 5) People who don’t see this are lesser “Sexy apocalypse” is a great phrase for that

Even if an AI did control an army of robot dogs with guns on their backs, it can't load the guns. Thinking an AI Apocalypse can happen is like thinking the buy button on Apple's website built your iPhone.

The fact that this is so bizarre just speaks to the widespread hard work and competence of people. Losers say people are generally lazy and stupid so they can think they're especially dedicated and smart in comparison. But remember that no stadium or power grid would *ever* work if that was true.

I was thinking earlier today of Goffman's stuff about the effort of seeming competent, and how unmooring it is to live in a time when the most consequential people on the planet are so sheltered from any interpersonal consideration that daily public life is just them endlessly picking their noses.

I was always excited by what odd array of elective classes my UNH professors had cooked up. Teaching the same set of existing modules in the UK made me so jealolus. And the idea of null-inputs using these perfect intersections of instructor-interest/academic-need AGAINST education is INFURIATING.

If you're calling for a renewed academic debate about the magical existence of Santa Claus it's because 1) you still selfishly, childishly hope it might be true or 2) you think easy glory totally awaits in settled debate vs a bad-faith fool. Sorry, I meant a debate about inherent racial superiority.

The trouble with centrist politics and capitalism being so intertwined is that a clear solution to so many modern problems is for people to get something better to do. But so many necessary, worthwhile, rewarding options are immediately swept off the table for being "unproductive" or "unprofitable".

Social media was the first time the rich regularly heard normal people going "that's so stupid" at flaunted wealth instead of being impressed or jealous. You have to wonder if they realised they couldn't surpass us in ways we cared about by making their own lives better, only by making ours worse.

The "they don't know about" meme, of a person standing alone in the corner of a party and watching two pairs of men and women talking (dancing?) in the middle of the room. Here the person in the corner is labeled "HUMANS" and they are saying "They don't know about dinosaurs" as they look at the other people at the party, who are labeled "BIRDS". This is, unfortunately, a thought that I had earlier today and felt profound in the moment. Though, the more profound commentary on humans might be that even birds don't know what birds are.

Based on this weekend's discourse around sex scenes, it's clear that "what if we pissed everyone off?" is a bold promotional concept being taken to new heights. I really thought we had a month or two before someone did a full affront to God. Anyway, thinking jealously of the troubles of the past:
A scene from The Simpsons episode "Mr. Plow" where Homer has gone to an advertising agency to try and save his snow plowing business. The executive he's talking to assures him of the agency's success by saying, with a smug expression, "You know those radio ads where two people with annoying voices yammer back and forth?"Homer looks on wide-eyed as the executive leans back in his chair, looking fully satisfied with himself, as he continues, "I invented those."Homer immediately leaps from his chair and punches the ad executive in the face, the executive cries out, "ow!"Homer returns to his seat, the executive leans back in his chair and looks as satisfied as before as he replies, "happens all the time."
