Endometriosis takes nine years to diagnose. That’s about to change. NICE has approved two tests: a saliva test reading microRNA markers, and a gut-sensor test returning results in 45 minutes, sparing women the keyhole surgery currently needed. buff.ly/QX3jHk8 #ShareGoodNewsToo

In 79 AD, Mt. Vesuvius buried the Roman town of Herculaneum under ash. In a villa, a library of papyrus scrolls was buried. For 2,000 years they’ve been unreadable. Researchers with the Vesuvius Challenge have read an entire scroll without opening it. buff.ly/WSjPmXf #ShareGoodNewsToo

There likely is nothing to be done at the moment to prepare for these possibilities (the only body of writing on the subject available in an emergency is science fiction), because no one of consequence is going to take this rubbish seriously unless it happens. The astronomer Richard Proctor commenting in Other Worlds Than Ours (1870) on notable nineteenth-century scientists' ideas about life on Jupiter. A highlight: Sir Humphry Davy held that Jovians were "numerous convolutions of tubes more analogous to the trunk of the elephant than anything else"!
Page 129 of Richard Proctor's 1870 "Other Worlds Than Ours":

We need not imagine, as some have done, that "the inhabitants of Jupiter are bat-winged," or with others, "that they are inveterate dancers." Nor, to take the views of more respectable authorities, need we agree with Sir Humphry Davy, that the bodies of the Jovials are composed of "numerous convolutions of tubes more analogous to the trunk of the elephant than any thing else;" with Whewell, that they are pulpy, gelatinous creatures, living in a dismal world of water and ice with a cindery nucleus; nor finally, with Brewster, that the Jovial may have his "home in subterranean cities warmed by central fires, or in crystal caves cooled by ocean-tides, or may float with the Nereids upon the deep, or mount upon wings as eagles, or rise upon the pinions of the dove, tha the may flee away and be at rest."

Gent being peacefully photogenic last night
Pink and blue sunset reflected on a still canal. A com trail crosses the sky diagonally and reappears in the water. The buildings and trees on the riverbank are silhouetted, only recognisable by glowing windows and the crowns of trees and streetlamps mirrored on the canal.

Peace and relief after a long but successful day moving house.

Saved by Stoppard
Sir, In 1993 my wife and I went to see the first production of Arcadia by Tom Stoppard (obituary, Dec 1), and in the interval I experienced a Damascene conversion. As a clinical scientist I was trying to understand the enigma of the behaviour of breast cancer, the assumption being that it grew in a linear trajectory spitting off metastases on its way. In the first act of Arcadia, Thomasina asks her tutor, Septimus: "If there is an equation for a curve like a bell, there must be an equation for one like a bluebell, and if a bluebell, why not a rose?" With that Stoppard explains chaos theory, which better explains the behaviour of breast cancer. At the point of diagnosis, the cancer must have already scattered cancer cells into the circulation that nest latent in distant organs. The consequence of that hypothesis was the birth of "adjuvant systemic chemotherapy", and rapidly we saw a striking fall of the curve that illustrated patients' survival.
Stoppard never learnt how many lives he saved by writing Arcadia. Michael Baum
