A coworker read one of my stories and wanted to talk to me about what it meant and like, dude, I don’t know it was just a vibe. I basically said “ftge story isn’t complete until the reader interprets it” and disappeared in a puff of smoke.

This is definitely how I feel about music. I listen widely and intentionally and still sometimes I’ll find not just a new artist but a whole new genre to get hype over. I’ve been jamming to a bunch of 80s new wave lately and seeing its fingerprints in all kinds of modern music.

I am now taking submissions of original 2026 short fiction projects — magazines, anthologies, single-author collections — for consideration in The Best Weird Fiction of the Year, Vol. 3. (Publishing Sept. 2027). Vol. 1 is a World fantasy Award Finalist.

I am seeking material first published this year, in 2026. To be clear, only weird fiction FIRST published in 2026 is eligible for inclusion in this volume. I will accept translated work as long as the first English-language publication was 2026.

Stories should be between 500 and 17,499 words. Audio only stories are also ineligible, unless they also appeared as text.

Yesterday I created an original piece from shapes and textures and a hundred layers of whimsy. It wasn’t a book cover. It was entirely for fun. When I shared it with someone they loved it and bought it for their upcoming collection. I think even my habit of moving goal lines has to admit it now.

Guys, I think I might be an artist. This is a word with shifting goals for me. I’ve sold 130 stories, but I consider writing a craft not an art. I design book covers for people, but that’s design, not art. I’ve never been comfortable calling myself an artist, basically because I can’t draw.

Good interview with Matt Hornsby on the Folded Space podcast today. I sometimes get a bit of imposter syndrome when listening to author interviews. My own writing process is so slap-dash that when I hear someone else’s they sound so much more legitimate. We all have our process though!

Two things about our submission calls: -Make sure you stay within the word count. I won't read manuscripts outside the word count. -For food systems subs, make sure your story is about a food system and doesn't just involve, say, a character eating food. cursedmorsels.com/submission-c...
