If anything is unique about this moment, it's not that the WH's narrow, white, celebratory history exists, it's that that specific story is NOT emerging organically, but needs to be imposed from above. People know when they're not gettingthe full story, and when given the option, they reject it.

Americans overwhelmingly want history thats complex, deep, and inclusive. It's only a small minority who think history exists to celebrate heroes and inspire patriotism. See here, here, and here. This is why the Trump administration needs to use the power of the federal government to erase it. +

We don’t need “great man history” to celebrate Black History Month. As I tell my students, the arc of Black history bends toward collectivism. Onesimus is great but we must remember the legions of unnamed Africans who shared the vital knowledge of inoculation within and beyond the U.S.
