I really need people to understand that being shitty to women is not separate from a person's politics. Contempt for those seen as weaker, resentment towards people who get something you think you're entitled to, using power to dominate or intimidate—these are the foundations of someone's"politics."

"It is now de rigueur for federal judges to 'do history' via originialsm or textualism. But the craft of history involves years of reading and immersing oneself in the secondary and primary literature, which a law degree doesn’t train for and the haste of writing an opinion does not allow."

Wrote a little thing about why expanding the number of justices is a time honored tradition* that used to facilitate the Supreme Court’s legitimacy for @inquirer.com (gift link!) *not sure about this headline, though—folks often used “court packing” as an epithet even in the 19th c.
share.inquirer.com
Supreme Court “packing” isn’t radical. It has deep roots in American legal tradition.
In the 19th century, Americans expected Supreme Court justices to represent and even travel around circuits and engage with citizens. Staying in D.C. is a more recent development.

I say it again and again: Because we don’t learn the real history of this country, we do not understand what this country is capable of. After 1870, 22 Black men served in Congress. By 1901, because of racist SCOTUS rulings, electoral coups and election cheating and violence, there were none.

I don't see this said enough: the widespread use of generative AI is not only making our jobs as educators harder logistically, but also emotionally. It is genuinely sad to be suspicious of students when you have spent so much time building a pedagogy based on trust and not being a cop. It sucks.

This is why in higher education you should not let your curriculum be driven by 'demand.' You need give students the precious opportunity to discover the things they don't already know they will be excited about.

Humanists need to lean into the fact that the robots cannot do what we teach: which is teach a person how to think critically, how to read closely, how to separate fact from fiction, how to see and understand the world. AI can write a B paper but it cannot transform a person’s way of thinking.
