Competitive Authoritarianism in America | Journal of Democracy
The United States has slid into competitive authoritarianism. The slide has been modest and remains reversible—but it is real. Even after Donald Trump, American democracy will remain fragile.

The conclusion that drones et. al. lead to stagnant conflicts and more attacks on "Factories. Infrastructure. 'Morale.' Individual human lives." is a gut punch that's hard to deny. From @sjshancoxli.liberalcurrents.com at www.liberalcurrents.com/the-return-o...
This is why the Iran war will not end. Trump will sign no agreement; neither will his successor. There will be a status quo on the ground-some combination of bribes paid and platitudes mouthed to allow the Gulf's oh- so-valuable produce to flow through that pinched strait—interrupted by periodic raids, from one side or the other, attempting to nudge that status
quo further in their direction. Second point: with this blurring of boundaries between the state of peace and the state of war, we should also expect to see the blurring of boundaries between military and civilian targets. The era of mass mobilization aimed to directly destroy the enemy's armed forces in the field-to take the tools of violence out of their hands-occupy their territory, and impose the victor's will by force. The cutting-off way takes as its proximate target the enemy's ability to make war—largely made up
of what in modern times have been labeled "soft targets." Factories.
Infrastructure. "Morale." Individual human lives.

it could be RCV/there are other methods than plurality-winner for single seats that are constitutionally in bounds

Adam Gurri @adamgurri.liberalcurrents.com · 21h
You can determine the winner of a state's EVs through ranked choice vote though, states have enormous discretion in how they award their EVs. I'm not saying that'll solve the basic problem of disproportionality in the EC, but it would solve the problem of spoilers.

Adam Gurri @adamgurri.liberalcurrents.com · 21h
The states were already moving towards effectively having a popular vote without it, similar to how the electoral college has come down to a "state popular vote" method of apportioning EVs in most cases

020
Adam Gurri @adamgurri.liberalcurrents.com · 23h
It does not, the House can be made PR with a single federal bill. The only thing IIRC that Article 1 specifies is the voter qualification, itself something that's been modified with subsequent amendments. Senate is a different matter of course; you can't meaningfully do PR with just two seats

We mean this stuff www.liberalcurrents.com/editors-note...
If you are serious about the military, you have to care about the quality of military governance. In his essay, Rock argues for fixing the democratic deficit in military governance and oversight, and, among other things, restoring the Secretary of State as a true center of gravity for foreign policy. Something else that we desperately need is simply to develop talent, with military and foreign policy expertise, that are neither MAGA idiots nor bloodthirsty neocons, but also are not of "the blob." Liberal elected officials need a brain trust they can draw on that are not embedded in the military-foreign policy establishments and its entrenched interests, but also are not insane reactionaries who believe that ditching the rules of engagement and going hog wild on the world stage are valid or useful.

Anyway I do think that people who believe multipartyism is a panacea are in for a rude awakening if we ever get it. But I do think America specifically has some institutional neuroses it (assuming it came in the form of PR and not a Canada/UK style multipartyism) would address
1211
Adam Gurri @adamgurri.liberalcurrents.com · 01/10/2026
I do not agree that it is deeply embedded Article 1 stuff. Not for the House, and certainly not for state legislatures.
3160
Adam Gurri @adamgurri.liberalcurrents.com · 01/10/2026
But more than anything, more than what happens at the national level, moving to multiparty competition would end the worse aspect of our party system: not the strict two-partyism of the federal government, but the two-at-most, more often just one partyism of state and local governments.
1322
Adam Gurri @adamgurri.liberalcurrents.com · 01/10/2026
In a competitive multiparty system with stronger parties, polarization would hopefully be replaced by something a bit more fragmented. More liberal parties than the GOP could run in places where the Democrats' specific party brand is too toxic, unaffiliated voters could potentially get scooped up
1252
Adam Gurri @adamgurri.liberalcurrents.com · 01/10/2026
Answering the first question, when you have weak parties and strong partisanship, and relatively even polarization, you get this situation where clowns like Donald Trump in 2016 have a like ~45% popular vote floor no matter what they say or do, making those high stakes elections a coin toss

I think the lesson of this is that women do not want to have casual sex with men they don't know well.
They'll end up hating themselves, being hated by other women, and even seen with contempt by the men involved. This is why these situations turn bad.
Maybe she was assaulted, maybe not, either way it was a terrible decision to make.
