JPMorgan recently noted that they "simply don't know how to model the endgame” of the Iran war. Keynes would likely have looked disapprovingly at the recklessness which now characterizes modern politics. Read my latest @liberalcurrents.com to understand why. www.liberalcurrents.com/you-should-r...

Keynes was a liberal for our age: morally serious, hopeful for a better future, and yet reconciled to the compromises necessary to preserve the fragile liberal order.

During that same period, the U.N relied on the U.S. for one quarter of its budget (22% today, ahead of Europe’s largest contributor Germany with 10%). 75 years later, NATO still relies on U.S for average of 65% of its military expenditure. France can’t even meet old 2% target without pension fund.

Tolerance is a virtū, a habit not just of the heart, but of action. We become better at it the more we practice it, and that only happens (optimally) with face-to-face interactions with people who seem alien to us.

Yes, @sjshancoxli.liberalcurrents.com, that people seem generally disinterested in sympathetically entering the mental world of others is partly a humanitarian problem. History gives us a view of the complexity of humans as they are, and literature invites us to imagine humans as they could be.

The article actually leaves plenty of room for extreme hostility toward illiberal viewpoints. In fact, reasonableness is a good starting point and path to such a conviction, resulting in much sharper criticism. That the article is perceived as scolding/unfeeling is unfortunate.

The worse part of it all is that none of these people have ever experienced any real violence or the spectacle of civil war. Those of us who have do not have an appetite for it because we know the brutal reality of it. Looks childish to see adults cheer ‘armed’ resistance and dream of ‘revolution’.

Like many people caught up in the unloosed passions of 2020, Hong said and did many things that were not wise. Politicians and their academic supporters should be more prudent and discerning. They should also learn from the Platner fiasco that liberal values matter and are not be abandoned.

As soon as political opponents lose, people pile on to gloat, mercilessly mock, and curse the loser, revealing that they care not about the well-being of the human, nor respect the human form. The political avatar is used for clicks and disposed. This viciousness is what drives most of politics.

This lady gathered 7,000 volunteers, hosted 500 canvassing events, and almost won. That is something she can be proud of. Her response to defeat is another thing she can be proud of. Magnanimity is a lost virtue. We should extend graciousness and good wishes to such a person.

I try to teach my family that it is okay to be wrong. It is part of being fallible humans. So grace must be extended. That said, politicians need to learn not to be swept up by passionate online waves. Also, many people need to be much more circumspect, prudent, and liberal.

Liberal societies can accommodate difference. Criticism from communists and other non-liberals can, at the margins, make liberalism a more robust doctrine. At the centre of culture, however, illiberal doctrines undermine the liberal peace and order we all depend upon for our security and happiness.

I say this again, people have so lost the meaning of liberalism that they think it’s a tribal sign one wears for merciless war, rather than a path to virtue. Liberalism is hard because it comes with its own demanding ethic, which if practiced well, safeguards the peace which makes change possible.

This is not in fact a *responsible* attitude for anyone, whether in politics or in life more broadly, to have. It is not just unreasonable, but bad for one’s soul. Wouldn’t recommend this uncharitable view to my children, and certainly not to people whomust do the already difficult job of politics.
