Linguistics IS important and interesting, but we linguists are too often not focussed enough on sharing that with people. We simply have to get better at this, and to get behind the successful LingComm that already is being done. If you've not read 'How to Kill a Language', for example, do it today!

Me to my ex: Taught a class today, and one student clearly wasn't masking their ADHD: they gasped, eye-rolled, and nodded so obviously at different points during my lecture. Gosh, I hope I'm not like that! *laughing nervously* My ex: Well...erm...basically yes that's you. 😂

I'm at the @lagbling.bsky.social annual meeting in Edinburgh, and I meet a linguist who recalls that she first met me at the Australian Linguistics Institute summer school at the University of Sydney. In 1992. 34 years ago. I'm blown away. I can barely remember where I last put my house-keys.

Well we have some documented cases of strong historical links between sign languages and the BSL family (BSLic) is one of the examples. Similarly between ASL and LSF, although I feel the BSLic links are much more obvious in terms of related vocabulary.

Amazing map! Thanks for sharing @coolhand.bsky.social. It’s beautiful. Any chance you can add in some sign languages to this? For example, Auslan in Australia and NZSL in NZ should have links to BSL in the UK. 😊
