Fascinating talk by @shanewriter.bsky.social at "New Perspectives on #Walking & #Wheeling in the City" conference run by @active-ata.bsky.social. Focus was on how walking is great for the brain - though I didn't expect something on the genetic markers for evolution of walking!

This is just a selection of the photos I’ve taken on Tyneside. It’s clear to see the kinds of spaces they are erected in - green & grey spaces on post-war estates, spaces that afford easy doorstep playing & hanging out, in communities experiencing disinvestment with few other accessible facilities.

I’m blind & here are two ways members of the public helped me today. First at a busy side road someone got out of their van to guide me as the traffic was gridlocked. I was nervous to walk behind & between vehicles. They made me feel safe & respected that I wanted to take my time.

My plan was to live post Rachel's lecture, but it was too engaging & I forgot. As well as being an inspiring Active Travel researcher, Rachel is, as Tom said, an incredible colleague. Always willing to support. In research, grant apps, QGIS trouble shooting. I love being a member of her team.

A brilliant inaugural lecture from our Director, Professor Rachel Aldred. Reflecting upon how transport inequalities led her to active travel research, the 'near miss project' which led to better reporting of road violence against cyclists, and then the developments of AT in London.
