penn state had a huge gulf between their offense and defense when building around merkle. minnesota is a much better program but i'm worried they'll run into a similar issue. see also: iowa state topping out at merely decent with a similar (and better) center in audi crooks.

one thing i've been able to do with premium subscriptions is put money back into the site. cbb analytics has been particularly useful. behold the main reason for my minnesota skepticism: as good as center gracie merkle is on offense, she's a negative on defense at the most important position.

a scatter plot of big ten players last year from cbb analytics with offensive win shares per 40 minutes on the x axis and defensive win shares per 40 minutes on the y axis. gracie merkle is the GM 44 dot all alone in the lower right corner, showing her as a great offensive player and one of the most negative defensive players in the big ten.
