What a joy it is to listen to and contemplate and write about roots music in the time of Rhiannon Giddens. The American musician, composer, and scholar has released a number of recordings from collaborative projects in recent years, but “Hope Is The Things With Feathers” is her fourth solo album and first since 2023's You're The One. Nevertheless, she is joined here by a bunch of old friends, and together they play through a collection of country, folk, and bluegrass tunes, recorded in a bare-bones fashion that puts you right in the center of the jam. Close your eyes and stay there as long as you can.

Last batch! All those English Muffins were trial runs for the final event. These are the ones I made today and submitted to the #NorthCarolina State Fair. Very pleased with how they turned out. I’ll let y’all know if I win a ribbon. (No expectations, competition here is tough.) #Baking

Chart showing the price of crude oil. It was around $60 / barrel From October 2025 - February of 2026. Then the Iran war starts in March and it absolutely skyrockets to $110 a barrel and has remained high. It’s $105 / barrel today.

Dampf Good #BBQ in Cary, NC is the real deal. Everything is smoked on site over wood and it’s delicious. While I’m strictly a bbq = pork guy, these native Texans are winning me over with their melt-in-your-mouth brisket.

A massive mobile trailer holds eight smokers. The fire door is ajar and you can see the wood burning inside the fire box.

Attempted a batch of English muffins. And while they are delicious, much work needs to be done on the handling and shaping, especially transferring the dough to the griddle so they don’t deflate and lose shape. They are delicious though. #baking #bread #cooking
