My article with @wmgbennett.bsky.social is finally out! We show that Xhosa speakers generalize the alternation of certain noun class prefixes to novel words based on root length—suggesting a synchronic pattern, rather than the fossilized remnants of a historical process. #linguistics

On the productivity of length-based alternations in Xhosa noun class prefixes
Noun classes in isiXhosa are each associated with specific prefixes on the noun stem. Some of these noun class prefixes exhibit length-based allomorphy: they take one form before multisyllabic stem...

Panel one. Stick finger singing, "Raindrops on rose/ And whiskers on kittens."

Panel two. Same stick figure holding pot and singing, "Bright copper kettles leave/ ...Flakes on my mittens!?"

Panel three. Same figure still holding pot and singing, "Hey, these are stone with a copper veneer!"

Fourth panel. Same stick figure has put down pot and is singing, "I've been bamboozled by Ea-Nāşir!"

(One of) my issues with LLMs is that we don't understand the steps the model takes to respond to a given query. Researchers at Anthropic have developed tools to see how their model comes up with a response—and the results are much better than just asking the model "tell me how you did that."

This paper from CogSci last year has my favorite figure for explaining transparent rule ordering in phonology: escholarship.org/uc/item/1kg1...
An image explaining feeding and bleeding via potato preperation. On the left are whole potatoes. An arrow goes up and to the left labeled as chopping to a smaller image of chopped potatoes. From the chopped potatoes and arrow goes down and to the right labeled as frying to a smaller image of fried potatoes. A green arrow underneath is labeled as feeding. From the same whole potatoes an arrow goes down and to the right labeled as pureeing and shows pureed potatoes. From the pureed potatoes a crossed out arrow goes up and to the right to the fried potatoes. A red arrow above is labeled as bleeding.
