Wait, there's a WNBA player who's among the best ever and I've never even heard her name? I just assumed, based on how the news covers the WNBA, Caitlin Clark was winning all the awards every year.
A'ja Wilson wins her third straight WNBA MVP and record fifth overall

He's got Melville-brain #DeadSouls
Alas! The fat ones of this world know how to manage their affairs better than the thin ones. The thin ones are mostly employed on special assignments or are merely carried on the civil service list, and flit about hither and yon. Their existence is weightless, insubstantial and utterly insecure. The fat men, on the other hand, never occupy peripheral positions but always central ones, and if they do sit down somewhere, then they sit securely and firmly, and the seat would sooner crack and sag beneath them than they would fly off it. They have no liking for external glitter; their tail-coats are not so artfully cut as those of the thin men, yet their coffers are filled with God's abundance. In three years' time the thin man will not have a single serf left to him that has not been mortgaged; the fat man goes on in his quiet way, and, lo and behold, suddenly at one end of town there appears a house that's been purchased in his wife's name, then at the other end of town another house, then near the town a comfortable little country home, then a village and all that goes with it. At length the fat man, having rendered service to God and Tsar, having earned the respect of one and all, leaves his position, transfers his household and becomes a landowner, a glorious Russian lord and master, the soul of hospitality, and he lives, and lives well.
After he is gone, his thin little heirs once again, in the time-honoured Russian way, gallop through the paternal fortune at full tilt.

Gogol, you absolute madman #DeadSouls
Black tail-coats flitted and scurried about, singly and in clusters, here and there, just as flies scurry about on a gleaming white sugarloaf on a hot summer day in July, while an aged housekeeper breaks and divides it into glittering lumps before an open window, and the children, all gathered round, look on, theircurious eyes following the movements of her coarsened hands raising the mallet, and aerial squadrons of flies sent aloft by a gentle breeze boldly wing their way in, like rightful owners, and, taking advantage of the old woman's poor sight and the sun that is bothering her eyes, swarm over the tasty pieces, here singly, there in thick clusters. Sated by the riches of summer, which in any event sets out tasty dishes at every turn, they have decidedly not flown here for the purpose of eating, but merely to display themselves, to strut back and forth over the heap of sugar, to rub their back or front legs against each other, or to use them to scratch under their wings or, extending both front legs, to rub them together above their heads, then turn about and again fly off, and again fly back in fresh, importunate squadrons.

This is just what it feels like to follow the news too closely
I wish the country and the people were plunged deep in the sea, because of their lack of stability, for I feel like one going to the torture when I write about them, and no one ever hears twice alike about English affairs," wrote Ambassador Bettini in a letter home to Milan.

I would have tried to prune this sentence a bit, I think
And things were no better at home, where his brother George, archbishop of York's ejection from the office of chancellor—an event buried beneath the blaze of the Bastard of Burgundy's visit-meant that the family had been removed from their central position in the administration of domestic government, too.

This explains exactly what I find either interesting or annoying about modern art, depending on how well it's pulled off. I've never quite had the words to express it, but this perfect.
Let me add this. You know how a puppy, when you point off in one direction for him, looks at you hand. It is hard to train him not to. The modernist arts in this century have gone to a great deal of trouble to untrain us readers, to force us to look at the hand. Contemporary modernist fine prose says, Look at my hand. Plain prose says, Look over there.

I mean, that's just the headline. You have to read the actual article
First paragraph: MILWAUKEE — A woman was escorted off a United Airlines plane by the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office after it was diverted to General Mitchell
International Airport from O'Hare
International Airport on Sunday night due to bad weather.

I guess I'll just click the article and find out
Headline: Woman escorted off
United Airlines flight and cited after it was diverted to Milwaukee due to bad weather

Subhead: A woman was escorted off a United Airlines plane after it was diverted to General Mitchell International Airport from O'Hare International Airport on Sunday night due to bad weather.

There's got to be a better way to punctuate this. To me an "off-balance sheet entity" is a tipsy ghost.
From Bloomberg (https://news.bloomberglaw.com/business-and-practice/big-tech-ai-spree-revives-accounting-devices-that-toppled-enron?ref=wheresyoured.at)

Enron Corp. exploited US accounting rules to hide from investors and lenders hundreds of millions in debt it had bundled into off-balance sheet entities — obligations that contributed to one of the biggest corporate collapses in US history.

I don't know anything about his personal life, but this is a funny juxtaposition of sentences
Mike Rowe's "Personal Life" section on Wikipedia:

He has stated that he is a gun owner and a supporter of the U.S. 2nd Amendment, but not a member of the National Rifle Association because he is "not much of a joiner" [44] He is in a long-term relationship, but not married.

I don't remember THAT from Toy Story 4 #iliad2026
But Aias in turn cut at Phorkys, the wise son of Phainops, in the middle of the belly as he stood over fallen Hippothoös, and broke the hollow of the corselet, so that the entrails spurted from the bronze, and he went down clawing the dust in his fingers.

Strange footnote here from Richard Martin: #Iliad2026
51 The poem humanely refuses to denigrate enemies. One of Patroklos' killers can still be described in terms of beauty, with hair like the Graces (daughters of Zeus who embody all elegance and joy), resembling a lovely tree.

There's basically two kinds of sink knob: the dial kind that stick forward out of vertical surface of the sink and turns counter clockwise to turn on. And the handle kind that come up out of the flat surface of the sink that pull towards you to turn on.
