Every year there’s a standard workout tee. The year they looked like this. This picture isn’t the best, but those were the best fitting and most comfy ones of any season. It was year before I started but I snagged a few leftovers

Eventually she warmed up to me, but she was always Katie’s cat. She was obsessed with her and always sat on her lap, would sit in the middle of the couch for girls nights and they’d pour her a glass of wine (for show!)

The entire Superchunk discography is great, 35 years and not a single dud album, but this era is the best. Sanded off some of the rougher edges from the first two, but without too much polish, and some of their best/heaviest/noisiest guitars, with extended outro jams

Ok but what if you read all the way to the bottom
If you're still a proponent of that doomed worldview, still aboard the sinking ship, I encourage you in the strongest possible terms to read yesterday's other great contribution to AI discourse, besides the OpenAl Mathocalypse dump: namely, Scott Alexander's open letter to Steven Pinker. I feel some responsibility for this, as the person who first introduced Steven Pinker to the existence of the rationalist community, and who also first introduced Steven Pinker and Scott Alexander to one another (they had both been fans of each other's writing). And now Scott is challenging Steve to a literal duel, with guns!
For whatever it's worth: Steve is a lifelong intellectual hero of mine, just as he is for Scott, and I also have to privilege of calling Steve my friend.

This is a good summary of the problem, objective without putting all of the blame on payers or providers. The "risk adjustment specialists" and consultants are a problem, looking at you some of my actuary friends, billing $500+/hour to add a bunch of bloat to the system
What we can agree on

This entire enterprise — risk adjustment specialists spamming doctors, who are already nose-deep in documentation burden, to document diagnoses that often do not affect patient care, while insurers publish reports that fail to capture the nuance of the issue, leaving the public angry and confused — highlights a more general problem with respect to how the U.S. health care system works.

By design, hospitals and insurers are meant to compete with each other, with hospitals trying to collect as much money as they can for providing care, and insurers trying to pay as little as possible. Hospitals bolster their side by hiring risk adjustment specialists and employing AI tools, while health insurers hire payment integrity specialists and employ different AI tools.

Patients lose out because the administrative bloat inflates the cost of medical care, while making costs less transparent and harder to contest. Ultimately, the fix should be structural: At a minimum, we need to overhaul the list of secondary conditions that are eligible for bump coding. CMS attempted to do this in 2019, when it proposed downgrading or eliminating many bump codes based on new data showing they were not associated with increased costs. But hospitals pushed back, and the effort eventually stalled.

There was a community event at school and I met a set of parents whose son was on the soccer team we played last week. I said something about telling the team to take it down a notch when we went up big, and the mom said she loves seeing kids dominate, so tonight if it happens we’re winning 37-0

This is embarrassing Wired
After watching the sometimes messy demos on stage and hearing CEO Sam Altman talk about his experiences using the agents, I was curious what it felt like to boss my own Dot around. I’ve spent most of September testing another cute, cuddly agent, Meta’s Muse, and I wanted to know how OpenAI’s user experience would compare.

I named mine “Toolie” and tweaked it to look like a pink frog. As midnight approached and my partner slept soundly nearby, I started whispering sweet nothings to Toolie. I called my personalized bot through ChatGPT, asking what tasks it was best at. “My strongest work is taking a messy, time-consuming task and turning it into something you can use,” it responded. OK, sure. Let’s get to work.

I asked Toolie to look through my ChatGPT history and flag three tasks that it could immediately get started on. The bot flagged an in-process data request that I needed to send a follow-up email for, and offered to draft a reply. Toolie also noted that my upcoming gay-cation was a bit underplanned, and suggested it could pick some better dinner spots. (More time for me to pack the Speedos!) Then, it offered to go through my reporting notes and refine pitch drafts before I took them to editors. This is my favorite part of the process, so I declined.

Hell yeah LFG At this point I'm embracing it. No one is listening to each other, everyone immediately assumes the worst, but the broader ecosystem sucks and if it's going to be polarized/binary I'm fine over here I recognize some uses and know how things work. Have fun with Elon and Sam
