The AstraZeneca researchers’ tool uses cheminformatics and quantum mechanics to assess molecules’ conformations and transition states as part of pre-screening for problematic isomers. Kirstine Anderson reports: #ChemSky @rsc.org www.chemistryworld.com/news/tool-fl...

Oh yeah no that's bad. That's very bad. Other figures are bad too and the riboflavin structure is ludicrous. What gives, @rsc.org?

Oh how I wish that had been the content! Actually I pretty much don't remember the content, any memories are dwarfed by the horrors of English Literature...

A few folks have asked how I make molecular animations from ChemDraw. Sadly, the answer has been “the old-fashioned way,” frame by frame. This was too slow. So I worked with Claude Science to create a webpage that animates your ChemDraws. Give it a try: rshenvi.github.io/cdxmorph/

Ah mine is just called "English" for some reason, I can't even claim to have that qualification

Wowwwww that makes 0 sense. Surely either the manuscript's language is fine or it isn't. I (native speaker) have no such certificate...

My local tech group just had a prototype demo of a game for crowds (even whole stadia!) and I only caught the results as they were fading off the screen, but proof that I was a top player 😂😂

Looooool I've only seen this written as "canonicalized" before Canonized SMILES strings sounds more like a @chemscrapes.bsky.social cartoon! 👼
Screenshot from a paper. Text:
"To ensure consistency and accuracy in representing these metabolic molecules, each molecule was represented by its SMILES string. The SMILES strings recovered from PubChem were canonized using Indigo python package, ensuring a standardized description of the molecular structures [27]."
The word "canonized" is highlighted.

Much as I did go on nights out quite a bit in uni, that has been far from an overwhelming contributor to sexual harassment in my life (though I am in chemistry not marine science)

Yes ACS it's called writing a citation-dense section of a publication 🙄 I guess JOC is off-limits for hopefully just a few minutes...

Nessa Carson @supersciencegrl.co.uk · 30/09/2026
No! Would toasting work? Not just... oxidize them further? 😅 Although I did fry some with other spices before adding noodles and soy protein for tea, and didn't notice much :( then just tested trying some whole and raw when I realized they lost their effect.

Sadly my Sichuan peppercorns (a little expired...) are no longer giving that lovely mala effect :( they still add some flavour but that's about it so I guess I need new spice. Here's the compound allegedly responsible for the effect; I wonder what it's degraded to? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydroxy...

Oh I completely agree. I've seen this before and I've said this before, including to students. They're called "functional" groups for a reason. Both have a hydroxyl moiety - with very different pKa and reactivity. Actually didn't know this was controversial!

I think it's fine and good, but I wouldn't be remotely upset if a student *didn't* learn it. It also takes 5 mins to learn if they then move to a lab where they use them (as opposed to in high school where it probably takes most of an hour)

I didn't know at the time that the 10B/11B isotope shift on BF4- is distinct enough to see in 19F NMR (broad spectrum decoupled) :(

Nessa Carson @supersciencegrl.co.uk · 29/09/2026
That is so cool. Reminds me of something that happened to me back in grad school (though it is a far less interesting story). Really couldn't understand why my compound looked clear as anything in 1H and 13C NMR, but the 19F clearly showed two distinct peaks, the imp being a whopping 20%.
