Looooool I've only seen this written as "canonicalized" before Canonized SMILES strings sounds more like a @chemscrapes.bsky.social cartoon! 👼

Screenshot from a paper. Text:
"To ensure consistency and accuracy in representing these metabolic molecules, each molecule was represented by its SMILES string. The SMILES strings recovered from PubChem were canonized using Indigo python package, ensuring a standardized description of the molecular structures [27]."
The word "canonized" is highlighted.

Faraday 2013–2026 🐈 I am so sad to say my little faceplanter has planted his last face. Faraday was a beautiful and highly extroverted cat who loved food, cuddling people & RuPhos (whether they invited it or not), invading almost all my WFH meetings, and above all else, chaos. He will be missed.

Bluesky must be on the way up! I've just been followed by a predatory "conference" by Sciinov. If you're not used to these, take a look - there's nothing "wrong" with how they present this, but this exact style of flier down to the fonts is used frequently by Omics and its descendants. #chemsky

I just looked it up. Under Pb itself it discusses how its principal uses are in roofs and water pipes, however there is a surprising safety note in the COPbo'' (that's lead carbonate...) section

Plumbic Carbonate (carbonate of lead, white-lead, lead spar, white-lead ore), COPbo". This salt is sometimes found crystallized in long white needles with other lead ores. It may be prepared by adding in the cold a solution of sodic carbonate to a solution of plumbic acetate. It is, however, largely manufactured for painting by the following process, known as the Dutch method: Into a great number of earthen jars, arranged side by side, a little vinegar (weak acetic acid) is poured. These jars stand on manure or tan; to each jar a roll of sheet lead is adapted, or bars cast into the shape of a portcullis are placed, so as not to touch the vinegar or project above the jar. The jars are loosely covered with boards, and a layer of tan or manure is placed upon the top. Another row of pots is then placed upon the top of these, covered in like manner. By this arrangement a pile of many rows is constructed. After the lapse of some days the sheets or bars of lead are taken out of the pots, when it is found that they are in great part converted into the carbonate, which is made ready for use by washing and grinding. The nature of the change is explained as follows: the heat of the decomposing manure, or tan, causes the acetic acid to volatilize and attack the lead, forming plumbic acetate, which is then decomposed by the carbonic anhydride of the decomposing manure

A curly brace containing C(Me)O, Pbo", and C(Me)O + CO + OH2 = COPbo" + 2 { CH3, COHo
Plumbic acetate + Carbonic anhydride + Water = Plumbic carbonate + Acetic acid.

The acetic acid thus set free acts on another portion of lead, and so the process is continuous. The carbonate, although very insoluble in pure water, is slightly soluble in water containing carbonic anhydride, which is nearly always the case. If the water were quite pure it would be contaminated with lead, and in course of time the whole of the lead would be dissolved. As all lead compounds are very poisonous, pure water, or water containing much fr…

MEMO TO: Meyers Group
FROM: A. I. Meyers

I am somewhat upset and dismayed to see how little time many of you are working in the laboratories. Also, the sloppy, filthy conditions of the laboratories coupled with general lack of effort causes me to inform you that I will no longer sit by idly while you have 100% attendance at parties and 10% attendance in the lab.

The amount of science I have heard from many of you over the past week or so is dismal in quantity and quality. Furthermore, re, an attitude seems ms to prevail that is very upsetting to me. The recent departure of two members of this group without proper completion of reports, theses, etc., has angered me these individuals will suffer in the future and I tell you this because I can't etc., has angered me considerably. I assure you both of help but feel others will do the same. The total disregard for my support regarding salaries, supplies, and placement in positions will no longer be a given to be taken for granted. Frankly, I'm tired of being the "fall guy" for your selfish little lives.

Anyone in this group that doesn't pull his (or her) own weight, produce at the maximum level, and show consistent signs of professionalism, will be seeking alternative means of employment. Do not take this threat lightly.

Finally, I'm sorry to have to send this memo, because there are a few true professionals in the group. However, the party-lime, fun-loving, occasional researcher is being targeted and will no longer be tolerated.
