Poet, pedestrian. My book WHAT TO CARRY INTO THE FUTURE (Roof, 2025) emerged from riding every NYC subway end-to-end. A love letter to the city, it charts joy amidst catastrophe. suelanders.com (she/her)

I hate that I have to re-up this today. as I detail in this piece, abandoning trans rights is not only immoral, but it's also BAD POLITICS for Dems, as it will turn away their own pro-LGBTQ base without winning over a single new voter: www.bostonreview.net/forum/how-no...

Trans people have fought and suffered and borne the brunt of the depravity of fascist excess (along with immigrants and Black people), and it looks like the most we can hope for is a decade or more fighting Democrats to restore rights we had in every state in the union as recently as 2020.

I processed all my Franklin Court/1976 feelings in what became one of the poems in the book (excerpt shown here) with lines still crack me up, “IT WAS 1976 IN PHILADELPHIA AND WE WERE ALL BENJAMIN FRANKLIN”
Excerpt from a poem with the text: Let's call this my earliest memory.
The experience was a museum under a ghost house, a skeleton, where Franklin's house
had stood before it was razed.
The ghost house, the skeleton in the shape of a house for which few records remained, intended to remind visitors
of the limits of historical knowledge.
They said it was no use
trying to reproduce Franklin's house.
The records were too few, they were outnumbered by memories.
So let's create a museum instead, underground and accessible via a ramp, a red ramp to invoke a colonial road, which would allow visitors to descend into the foundation of what had been Franklin's house. And a hall of mirrors.
Mirrors adorned with neon lights spelling out
Franklin's various selves. Mirrors and their neon lights designed to inspire visitors to reflect on our own various selves.
IT WAS 1976 IN PHT ADELPHIA AND WE WERE ALL BENJAMIN FRANKLIN

Around 2013, while writing my Philly-inspired book Franklinstein, they renovated the old museum. An archivist there was kind enough to show me remains of the original exhibits. The phones had been thrown out (sob!), but the mechanical figures survived in a storage closet alongside…police riot gear.
Figurines of revolutionary war era characters in cardboard boxes with riot gear shields in the background.

Best part was that the museum stayed exactly like this for DECADES: a time capsule. The images in this thread are from a visit in the aughts.

The phones were the shit. You'd have to dial the full number—including area and country codes then wait out the corresponding rotary clicks (higher numbers take longer than lower ones), wait for them to pick up—to hear a recorded message from a famous person saying something about Franklin.

The museum was as much a celebration of 70s tech as it was of Franklin: There was a hall of mirrors, animatronic dioramas of the Constitutional Convention, and a room full of Princess phones.
A mirrored room with neon lights spelling out words associated with Ben Franklin: citizen, inventor, diplomat, scientist, etc. The words are slightly out of focus because they blinked in and off to display others. The mirrors were supposed to help you see yourself as/in Franklin. Animatronic figures on a parquet floor that is a rendering of the Constitutional Convention. Recessed into the floor you would have to peek over a ledge to see/hear them move and speak to show different scenes from the event. A glorious bank of princess phones facing a board listing numbers to call to hear quotations about Franklin

My dad took me to the brand-new “Benjamin Franklin Underground Experience,” an underground museum at Franklin Court, beneath the "Ghost House"—a skeletal frame marking the footprint of Franklin's demolished home.
A white frame of a house representing the shape/location of Ben Franklin’s house in Philadelphia. Called the “ghost house” by its architect that simultaneously renders what is both there and not.
