Now it just has to survive drying, bisque firing, and the anagama 😬

I can add one wide, flat coil a day, and then it has to firm up until the next day before it can support more. I'm just hoping I've scored and paddled and smoothed and compressed enough for it to survive firing

Got the wild clay firmed up a bit, but I'm trying to keep this on the lighter side, which means add on a bit and walk away to let it dry enough to support the next layer. Will it survive all the way through an anagama firing? I know the clay itself is high fire, but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Decided I should do some hand building with my wild clay, but it's a bit too soft. Laid out slabs of it on plaster to get a bit of the excess moisture out of it, so when I come back it'll probably be too dry 🙃

St. Mark's Basilica has four famous bronze horse statues over the main doorway. The ones currently there are replicas. These are the originals, which date to the late Roman Empire and were stolen by Napoleon after he conquered the city in 1794. They're now in the church's museum

Did you know that some of the earliest computers were actually weaving looms? Joseph Marie Jacquard is credited with inventing the most successful such loom, which operates off punchcards that determine which warp threads are lifted. Bevilacqua still uses this system for their silk velvet

I haven't been posting on this account because I've had zero ceramic content to share for a while now. I've got a partial tendon tear in my R wrist that's really limited me, plus it's been a busy, snowy winter. Anyway, we spent most of Feb in Italy, and I'll crosspost some of that content

The kiln actually cooled enough overnight that I was able to empty it before I got on the road this morning, after all. The only casualty, sadly, was the dog bowl I threw for Petal in 100% wild SC clay. May still glaze okay, but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. The rice bowls I did in the same clay turned out great

All valves are open now and the highest temp I saw was 783.5°C. Now it's hovering a bit lower and will be going down as the propane runs out, but I think I got about cone 016, which is sufficient for bisque firing. Probably won't be cool enough for glazing before I have to leave tomorrow, though

Using this setup with only 20# propane tanks, I've not been able to get things above bisque temps. That's at least adequate to get work ready for the anagama, though

Hello, quartz inversion!
An orange pyrometer sitting on pieces of refractory brick showing a temperature of 573.7°C. At around 573°C, quartz in ceramics undergoes a change in crystalline structure that results in a rapid and reversible change in its volume. This can result in cracks in vulnerable or stressed areas in the ceramic

Today was the last work day at the anagama before loading starts next weekend. Since I'm away for work all this coming week, I need to try to bisque fire tomorrow, so I put my whisky tumblers in a low oven (mine heats as low as 170°F/77°C) before I left. Hopefully there won't be any disasters

Carved my whisky tumblers this evening. The one at lower left popped off the batt a bit too exuberantly, flipped out of my hands, and took a hard fall. Got the rim more or less back in shape but it left an ugly bump on the inside so that one's gonna be for personal use

So... I'm gonna be a bit more blunt today in regards to AI usage in the TTRPG space. The harder it is made for folks using AI to find acceptance and gain traction, the less of it we will see. This means blocking them on Social Media, and reporting them on sites where they sell their trash.

They're consistent insofar as they're all cylinders. That just means people can pick the mug that's right for them, though, right? Also, this makes ten mug bodies I've thrown this week, which is a lot for me

the old bisqueware i turned into a chia pet
This was a tall pot I was throwing when it collapsed on the wheel, but the walls sagged and layered in a visually poetic way. I put it through the first kiln firing and so it's pink, as the clay has undergone quartz inversion. It never got the second firing or glaze, so it's similar to terra cotta for the purpose of sprouting chia seeds. It's a loosely triangular shape, but the bottom is round. It's sort of like a bandshell or roman amphitheater. There is a piece of fallen wall in the center, creating the appearance of three concentric rings on the right side. It's speckled all over with the seeds. and many of them have sprouted dark green. Because it is so porous, however, it's difficult to keep even moisture and allow all the seeds to grow. I should make a humidity jar for it instead of just plopping it into a planter dish.
