Just watched episode 1. I love the intentional mocking half-assery. The goofy edits. And the characters. Fun!

It's just clutter. It's interfering with finding actual, worthwhile content.

From the Destroyer from 1989. My pencils and Al Williamson amazing inks. That was such a fun job and a thrill to have Al ink most of the job.

His work has changed a lot since Perdido Street Station-- more literary and art influences. If you liked Perdido you might want to read The Scar.

There's this site that quotes books and you can tell it's Ai-driven because it has quotes like: She opened the door. or "What time did you say it was?" Randomly pulled, contextless, meaningless quotes. This is what we're building data centers for?

Latest read, Terrortome (2022) by Matthew Holness; Holness masquerades as horror writer Garth Marenghi writing as horror writer Nick Steen in a parody of Clive Barker's style. Pokes fun at horror, writers, editors. It's slapstick, absurdist, witty. One of the funniest books I've ever read! #BookSky

How I arrived on bluesky:

This is a good study for how to blur. The foreground is slightly blurred rather than the focus beyond it. And it's not completely blurred, only the outer edges.

Patch Zircher @patrickzircher.bsky.social · 7h
The blur is like the demonic typewriter in Garth Marenghi's Terrortome, except it's for digital art. Deep, scary, creepy voice, "This is the drawing program. Blur it, Patch." No. "I said blur it!" No! "Oh, I am SO going to rip you a new one, human!"

Two approaches to panels in which you're concerned the background is overwhelming your characters. The blur panel. And the fade panel. I prefer the fade.

That's a cool title but I'm so used to the other. Both suit the story.

Such a shame. I know another book I recommend went o-o-p and is extremely expensive. Amazon (yes, I know) claims to have 5 copies left of Darkly She Goes.

I keep recommending Darkly She Goes (art Vincent Mallie, script Hubert) for storytelling and a fully dimensional emotional tone. So I will again. It was published by NBM in 2023, and is still readily available (don't expect that to always be the case with books, comics especially). It's terrific.

And I've decided to make it a custom to have each Solomon Kane series include a type of animal in the title; The Serpent Ring, The Lion Errant, and ___ ____ _____.

I have the next Kane series idea 'solidified' and the first two issues of the series outlined (Outlined means, if I were working the old school Marvel way, I could start drawing them). Working on the second half of the outline today. "STOKED!" as they use to say!

Cover by Matt Baker.
Amazing Ghost Stories #14 (1954). On the cover, five swamp creatures are trying to climb into a small boat. A man in the boat is attempting to fight them off with a spear while a beautiful woman clings to him. One of the creatures has grabbed her leg and is trying to pull her overboard.

@patrickzircher.bsky.social knows the score. A fun and engaging pulp adventure that pays tribute to Howard’s grim Puritan avenger while being its own original tale. Excellent artwork too, madone.

Maugham and Fleming even have similar, detailed styles. Where they differ is Maugham plays it closer to the vest, is more grounded (think Le Carre's spies) and outside circumstances leave Ashenden a helpless observer and, occasionally, a failure. Bond is more of a catalyst.

Latest read, Ashenden (1927) by W Somerset Maugham; Ashenden is a British secret agent assigned missions by R, a retired colonel. The novel is episodic, a series of missions in Italy, Switzerland, Russia, & more. Clearly Maugham influenced Fleming (both writers were real life operatives). #BookSky

It's in the middle where you can write a romantic scene, have a character reminiscence about the past or speak of their fears or aspirations, reveal their resourcefulness, add a (or another) humorous scene, or buildup the villain.

I love writing the middle of a story. The beginning & end are great but they also have the most "requirements". Attention-grabbers, intros, climaxes, outros. But the middle--though you present a few obstacles for the characters, you also get to play with them, have them interact, add dimension.

Also in defensive driving school someone asked if my citation was because I was in a hurry. "No. I don't think I've been in a hurry to get anywhere in 30 years. What's the difference if we're here, there, or on the way. We are who we are." Silence. (whoops, I forgot how to talk to people)

True, sometimes. They were a release valve; two hours of being unreasonably stupid with no consequences. Just like the action movies were two hours of violence with no consequences.

There were quite a few essays written back in the day about the difference between real life voyeurism and voyeurism in movies.

Believe me, MOST of us thought peeping at a college girl taking a shower was wrong-- no matter how many times it was in a movie.

A lot of us just thought many 70s and 80s comedies were stupid and wrong. Now some people argue about the ethics of these movies like they were documentaries.

(Men are issued more citations by the way-- the class was 80% men, also). Another guy, who came late to class, falls asleep. Guy next to him wiggles the table to gently wake him. I lightly tap him with my coffee cup. We're trying to keep him from having to take the class again.

So just a defensive driving class was enough people for a while. Instructor asked a statistical question about which gender is issued more citations. One guy said, "Well, it's 50/50, I'll guess women." Someone said, "It's not exactly 50/50." The guy goes, "It's 50/50 and it's always been 50/50!"
