Patch Zircher @patrickzircher.bsky.social · 19hTrying not to hurt anyone's feelings. The way DePaul was let go-- that's very typical with publishers. Which art approach is right? That's a matter of preference. I'm personally fond of the older "illustrators style", there are a lot of fundamentals there. But it has to be 'lively', always. 1101

Patch Zircher @patrickzircher.bsky.social · 15/10/2026Latest read, Best Horror of the Year 8 (2016), ed. Ellen Datlow; another offering in what's probably the best annual horror anthology of the modern age. For the most part, this is horror for honor roll students; suggestive, nuanced, tense, atmospheric--allowing readers to draw conclusions. #BookSky 0181

Patch Zircher @patrickzircher.bsky.social · 14/10/2026Latest read. The Good Soldier (1915) by Ford Madox Ford; love is a not-so-tender trap in this novel of conniving, unloving wives and unfaithful husbands. When 'the Good Soldier'. Edward Ashburnham, falls in love out of marriage, his socially proper, respectable wife, drives him to his doom. #BookSky 1162

Patch Zircher @patrickzircher.bsky.social · 14/10/20261st grade. We were given Dick and Jane books and I was already reading Marvel comics. I felt like I was hobbled. Forced to move in slow-motion. 1272
Patch Zircher @patrickzircher.bsky.social · 13/10/2026Goodreads 3.5 for Cline's The Girls (The Shirley Jackson Award winner) and the response below to The Girls... in indicative of why Goodreads is worthless. Of the batch of books I recently read, it was one of the best. 120
Patch Zircher @patrickzircher.bsky.social · 13/10/2026Well, I read Book II (of VII) in the 1000 page epic that is Musashi. I'm just going to have to do this one book at a time, every once in a while, reading a lot else in between. I thought I'd love this much more than I do. After 110 to 120 pages, I'm dying for something more nuanced. 1201
Patch Zircher @patrickzircher.bsky.social · 13/10/2026Latest read, The Girls (2016) by Emma Cline; Evie Boyd is a 14 year old girl with a lousy home life, lousy parents, poor self esteem, & a broken radar for 'the bad people'. Thus begins her life with a Manson family-like cult in late 1960s California. Absolutely compelling. #BookSky 2172
Patch Zircher @patrickzircher.bsky.social · 13/10/2026Latest read, The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes (1893) by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle; 12 adventures, with the Greek Interpreter introducing Mycroft Holmes and The Final Problem, Professor Moriarty. Which means this is some of the most fun to be had in the Holmes canon. #BookSky 2413

Patch Zircher @patrickzircher.bsky.social · 11/10/2026Latest read, On the Calculation of Volume II (2020) by Solvej Balle. In this 2nd book in the series, rare books dealer Tara Selter is trapped in time another 3 yrs. A convincing emotional portrayal of the experience as she craves seasons & holidays, and is lost in reading history. #BookSky 2121

Patch Zircher @patrickzircher.bsky.social · 10/10/2026Watched Boorman's Hope and Glory and Ian Bannen is in it. Sometimes I miss character actors more acutely than stars. They represent eras. You grow up with them. I saw Bannen in 18 movies and numerous TV episodes. #TCMParty 3241

Patch Zircher @patrickzircher.bsky.social · 10/10/2026Peckinpah directing Something Wicked This Way Comes? Maybe. The core of the story is the father and the two boys, and their good natures overcoming evil. 1968? I would have wanted Robert Wise-- who directed The Haunting and the Sound of Music. 3111
Patch Zircher @patrickzircher.bsky.social · 09/10/2026Latest read, Something Wicked This Way Comes (1962) by Ray Bradbury; a philosophic, poetic tale about the desires & regrets, amplified by Mr. Dark & his travelling carnival, that haunt us-- us in 2 best friends and a father. The novel began in 1955 as an idea for a musical--for Gene Kelly. #BookShop 4424
Patch Zircher @patrickzircher.bsky.social · 09/10/2026Last night The Fiend Without a Face and First Man Into Space (also a horror movie though the title doesn't give that impression) were on TCM. Patch Zircher @patrickzircher.bsky.social · 08/10/2026Latest listen, Anne Carson at the 92nd Street Y Poetry Center. Anne Carson, in 2009, reads her works Cassandra Float Can and Lecture on Pronouns. This is magical, playful, clever. Loved it. #BookSky 182
Patch Zircher @patrickzircher.bsky.social · 08/10/2026Latest read, Colonel Sun (1968) by Kingsley Amis; Amis was an established, critically-acclaimed writer at the time he agreed to write the first James Bond continuation novel. But also a Fleming afficionado--and it shows. Colonel Sun really captures the feel and style of early Bond. #BookSky 4323
Patch Zircher @patrickzircher.bsky.social · 07/10/2026Latest read, The Oresteia (458 BC) by Aeschylus; the trilogy of the House of Atreus, from Clymenestra's murder of her husband Agamemnon, to Orestes' murder of his mother Clymenestra, to the fate of their House and Athens. Mythophiles will enjoy the personifications of Athena & the Furies. #BookSky 1122
Patch Zircher @patrickzircher.bsky.social · 07/10/2026Latest read, Terrortome (2022) by Matthew Holness; Holness masquerades as horror writer Garth Marenghi writing as horror writer Nick Steen in a parody of Clive Barker's style. Pokes fun at horror, writers, editors. It's slapstick, absurdist, witty. One of the funniest books I've ever read! #BookSky 7472
