Tomorrow keep your eyes peeled, the big announcement I've been hinting at will be out there...tomorrow... A very appropriate one for Halloween, I dare say...

Since the show has come out, I thought I’d give out a random recommendation for East of Eden. For my money John Steinbeck’s masterpiece (and Steinbeck’s too.) Steinbeck takes a family drama and elevates it to myth. Also Steinbeck’s most Biblical and existential.

Batman & Robin: Year One has Mark Waid and Chris Samnee showing how it should be done. Indeed, Batman can be dark and tragic while still being unapologetically fun. Also Chris Samnee’s art…madone.

It’s James Ellroy who likes to say that closure is bullshit, but if it were M. John Harrison, he’d say clarity is bullshit. He doesn’t build his worlds as opposed to making you feel like what it is to live in them. It’s not an easy or even always pleasant read, but I recommend it.

One thing I've noticed since I've returned to faith. Back when I was an agnostic, I was expecting this moment of clarity where everything made sense. But as I've re-accustomed myself to faith, I realize that the clarity embraces you.

Just finished Zenith from Morrison. This one deeply surprised me, as I was expecting this to be a rougher work from a creator coming to prove themself to the world, but Morrison comes in fully formed, deconstructing the superhero genre in their own unique voice. Top tier Morrison.

Jesus’ Son is a hard book to describe. It’s like Knockemstiff’s drug fueled, hallucinogenic older brother. It isn’t a story about addicts. It’s Denis Johnson attempting to show you what addiction feels like. It’s a delicate, feverish read, yet with moments of deep empathy and humanity within.

Britton @someokiedude.bsky.social · 22/08/2026

Hard Rain Falling punched me in the gut. It’s a bleak, often unsparing book though filled with moments of grace and tenderness, more like a gritty drama than a straight crime thriller. Jack Levitt is one of the most tragic characters I’ve read about in a while. Sometimes redemption isn’t enough.

I was initially unsure where I was going to land with this, with the massive book hangover from American Tabloid/Everybody Knows. Abbott touches on similar themes in The Song Is You as the other two books, but Abbott adds the female perspective that’s oft overlooked in noir. Read it.

I used to think Harrison’s My Sweet Lord was a bit cheesy when I was younger, but as I’ve grown older I realize it’s anything but. It’s gained a deeper meaning for me since my recent rediscovery of faith. Whether you’re a Christian like me or not, this song will get you.
