FairVote CEO Meredith Sumpter: "Voters across the country love ranked choice voting & the additional power it gives them – it’s not going anywhere. In my home state of Alaska, open primaries + RCV led to more competition & a bipartisan legislature that is delivering results to voters."

This Congress was the least productive in recent history. Nearly 9 in 10 Americans feel our politics doesn’t work for them. Can ranked choice voting improve government? Yes. RCV pushes lawmakers to work together & deliver results for all voters – not just their partisan base. #RankedChoiceVoting

Does ranked choice voting help Democrats or Republicans? Neither. Ranked choice voting is totally party-neutral. Republicans & Democrats have won #RankedChoiceVoting elections across the country. RCV simply makes sure candidates need support from a majority of voters to win.

More choice for voters should be a good thing. But in choose-one elections, more choice means candidates can win without majority support. In yesterday’s Dem primary for New Hampshire’s 1st Congressional District, the winner got 37% of the vote. 63% of voters picked someone else.

In Oklahoma, June primary voters had to go back to the polls two months later for runoffs. If the state used instant runoff voting – a.k.a. ranked choice voting – these voters would only have to vote once. Oklahoman Ciera Schibi explains how. ⬇️

You’ve probably heard a lot about two Dan Sullivans running in Alaska’s U.S. Senate race. Some worry it could create a "spoiler" problem for Senator Dan Sullivan. But Alaskan voters don’t need to worry about spoilers – because they’ll use ranked choice voting in November. #RankedChoiceVoting

How does ranked choice voting fit with "one person, one vote?" As @robrichie.bsky.social of @expanddemocracy.bsky.social explains on C-SPAN, RCV embodies the principle of "one person, one vote" better than choose-one elections. #RankedChoiceVoting

On August 25, South Carolina Republicans will vote in a runoff to pick a nominee to replace the late Senator Lindsey Graham. It's the 4th statewide SC GOP primary this summer, 2 of them being runoffs. Ranked choice voting elects majority-supported nominees w/o costly, low-turnout runoffs.

In this week's Dem primary for Wisconsin governor, 68k votes went to candidates who withdrew after early voting began. Instead of going to active candidates like frontrunners David Crowley & Francesca Hong, these "zombie" votes were wasted. The solution? Ranked choice voting. #RankedChoiceVoting

Early voting has begun in Alaska's August 18 primary, featuring competitive races for governor, US Senate, & more. It's the 3rd cycle w/ Alaska's "Top Four" system, which includes an open, all-candidate primary & a ranked choice voting general election. Here's what to know🧵

In yesterday’s Dem primary for Wisconsin governor, frontrunners David Crowley & Francesca Hong were separated by 4k votes. 68k votes went to candidates who withdrew after early voting began. With ranked choice voting, these "zombie” votes could have gone to active candidates.

If you vote early for a candidate who drops out – after you’ve already voted, but before Election Day – your vote is effectively wasted. It's called a "zombie vote," and it's a problem Michigan & Wisconsin primary voters are learning about the hard way. The solution? Ranked choice voting.
131
FairVote @fairvote.bsky.social · 11/08/2026
In Michigan's primaries last week, tens of thousands of votes went to candidates who already dropped out. The same will happen in Wisconsin's primary for governor. "Zombie votes" are a widespread problem, leaving many voters without a say. Ranked choice voting can solve this problem.

➡️ @tanglenews.bsky.social went to Alaska to learn what’s changed since the state adopted ranked choice voting & open primaries. After years of gridlock, state lawmakers now consistently work together to get things done. Why? The reforms push lawmakers to reach all voters, not just a narrow base.

Why don’t more independents run for office? In a word: "spoilers." Our choose-one elections discourage independent & third-party candidates from running, & discourage voters from supporting them. Ranked choice voting would solve the spoiler problem, and give voters more choice.
