I know I am in America because I pressed a button in a public space and then heard HELP NEEDED IN THE DEODORANT AREA over the intercom. (I did need help in my deodorant area, but I didn't want everyone to know.)

The first Peanuts strip by Charles M. Schulz was published on October 2, 1950.
Four black and white panels of a boy and girl sitting on steps.
1st panel: Charlie Brown is approaching and the boy says:
"Well! Here comes ol' Charlie Brown!"
2nd panel: As Charlie Brown passes, he says "Good ol' Charlie Brown...yes, sir!"
3rd panel: "Good ol' Charlie Brown..."
4th panel: Once Charlie is gone, "How I hate him!"

I don't care how many people try to convince me otherwise. This sneaker company logo is a person smoking as they stare into the sky, deep in the midst of an existential crisis and quite possibly French.

My kid & I thought about going to the Jane Austen market at the Guild Hall, but the line was around the block.

I love seeing the wide variety of people in their empire waist dresses and bonnets, with their walking sticks and ruffles, walking around with their cell phones, sometimes in period shoes and sometimes Doc Martens.

Years ago my mother-in-law, upon seeing a man in full Henry VIII drag at a renaissance festival in Long Melford, said, "He must feel like such a twat." She couldn't be convinced that he was living his best life.

I am waiting for a phone call, & so answered a number I didn't recognize. Me: What is this about? Lady on the line: Working with you on a book that has come highly recommended to us. Me: Oh! You're a scam! I didn't realize. Her: Your book wasn't that good. [hangs up]

It's the point in a novel draft when I wonder how many times I can use the word "thrum." (Please don't tell me. This is a decision every novelist must make on their own.)

There’s such an easy answer to this “gotcha” question and it’s “Sports are inherently unsafe and unfair and it’s ridiculous to single out trans athletes when we allow 150 pound linebackers to go up against 260 pound linemen in freshman football on a daily basis. Let kids play with their friends.”

I enjoyed the new Anthony Bourdain biopic but was distracted by a prominent and anachronistic velcro wallet appearing in 1975. (The tattoos on the bad guy's bicep are also not of their time.)
