Week 4 is “moonlit roost” Wild turkeys roost in trees at night to protect themselves from ground predators. Young turkeys will roost in trees at around 2-3 weeks old, or when they are able, tucked under the protective wings of their mother until they develop more weather resistant juvenile feathers.

Week 2 of #sketchyhabitats2026 “twisted brambles” and these are all birds you’ll find among the brambles, but only one of them is singing its own call. The other three are known, to varying degrees, for their mimicry skills. Mockingbirds, blue jays and brown thrashers are all capable of mimicry.

Harbinger of spring (Erigenia bulbosa) is a member of the Apiaceae family, the same family that brings us parsley. Reported to be in only a few northwestern counties in Georgia, it is nevertheless found in other parts of the US where it is a welcome early sign of spring. (1/2) #nativeplants

These crabs are native to the Atlantic and Gulf and can often be observed waiting in ambush for prey in shallow, salty waters. There is some evidence that they may have an impact on invasive Green Crab as habitats with higher Blue Crab populations often have lower Green Crab populations!

I was devastated to hear the news that a fire broke out in @southriverartstudios last week. Artists not only lost their art, they also lost the tools and spaces they needed to continue to create. I am donating the proceeds from the sale of this print I made at a Big Ink workshop hosted by SRAS.

The best way I can describe why Wikipedia is the optimal model for all of us is that it is a knowledge base that is crowdsourced BY HUMANS with discussions, revisions, moderation BY HUMANS. It is also transperant (we can see who makes edits) The dumb AI slop is like an opaque synthesis by machines.

#woodblockprint #reductionprint #woodblock #woodcut #woodcutprint For a while now I've desperately wanted to make a new woodblock print, but I was super nervous lol. I did it though!! Based on a picture of a restaurant at dusk I made when I was in Japan. I'm super happy :))
A woodblock print of a restaurant at dusk. The the low building sits in the distance, by a road and surrounded by trees. It has a wide, brightly and warmly lit entrance, contrasting the cool colours of the sparsely clouded sky.

It’s #mothweek and to honor these under appreciated pollinators I’ve illustrated a Giant Leopard Moth in the shadow of a Hoary Bat on the hunt! I may end up carving this into a linoleum block.
A digital illustration of a spotted white moth inset within the outline of a black bat. Behind them is a yellow circle and above them is a cluster of small flying insects. The same digital illustration, this time in monochrome with just the white moth, black bat, and black insects.

So proud of little Marietta, GA for standing up yesterday. Even the pouring rain couldn’t put a damper on this crowd.
A photo of a gathering of people on a city street corner holding protest signs. It is visibly raining. More people stand on balconies in the building above. A photo of a large gathering of people standing on opposite corners in a city intersection. They are holding protest signs. One visible sign says “no sign is big enough to list all of the reasons I’m here”. A flag that says “fuck Trump” can also be seen.

I’ve noticed, if you disturb their web, they voluntarily shake and then just stop on a dime. According to Reddit, common in orb weavers. And if you really get too close they drop out of the web like a base jumper. But they have a little safety line to get back up once you’ve backed off.

I've been taking early walks in the park to watch and listen to birds for my sanity, and the Merlin Bird ID app has been indispensable for identifying bird songs. Merlin was funded by a grant from the NSF, the science funding agency that Trump is trying to destroy. www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/...
Screenshot of a bird sound identification app in use. The screen shows an audio recording at 27.3 seconds, with a green pause button at the center. Above the timer is a spectrogram visualizing the bird sounds as a series of dark and light horizontal and vertical patterns on a gray background. Below the timer, the app provides a list of "Best suggestions" for bird species based on the recording. The top suggestion, highlighted in yellow, is "Common Chiffchaff," with a thumbnail image of a small brownish bird. Other suggestions include "Great Tit" (a black, yellow, and white bird perched on a branch), "Rose-ringed Parakeet" (a green parrot with a red beak), and "European Robin" (a small bird with an orange-red breast). Each entry includes a small arrow for more information.
