Thames Water is a monopoly with 16 million trapped customers. Yet KKR – a predatory private equity firm – doesn't even want to own it. If public ownership isn't the answer and private investors won't invest, then maybe Steve Reed has no idea what he's doing.

"In 1938, Prague was far away. Most people did know nothing. That is no longer true: the whole world is just a click away. We know the people of Gaza or Kyiv. If you’re on the internet, it’s hard not to hear their voices." Has social media made the news too much for the human brain?

This week: has social media made the news too much for the human brain? Also: you’re not imagining it, the Tube really is getting louder; and some teeny tiny horses.

“Fixing climate change is too expensive.” Um no. What’s really expensive is doing nothing. Climate disasters cost billions—and those costs are rising fast. Climate solutions save money and lives, as well as building a better world for us all 🌏💚

Despite world leaders’ pledge to end deforestation by 2030, tropical forest loss reached record highs in 2024. Fires were the main cause, overtaking land clearances from agriculture for the first time on record. See more from my colleagues’ analysis here: 🧪

A lot of what I see reported as climate solutions will do absolutely nothing for climate. We know what works right now (top 5: wind, solar, energy efficiency, stop deforestation, cut CH₄ emissions).
The image presents a bar graph illustrating various mitigation options for reducing net emissions by 2030, measured in gigatons of CO2 equivalents per year. It categorizes options into sectors such as Energy, Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use, buildings, transport, industry, and others.

Nobody ever planted a tree in this photo. It was a working gravel pit 30 years ago. We need to get over our obsession with planting trees and let nature do the job. The results are just SO much better. It's also about realising we are not, in fact, central to everything. 🌍
