Thames Water might soon be brought into a Special Administration Regime, but public ownership alone won’t fix a system rigged for private profit. Without real social control, we risk repeating the same mistakes.
Should we prioritise ensuring water is used to irrigate fields for crops

...or for cooling data centres?

The Government said it’d cost £99bn to publicly own our water. But this drew on calculations by — drumroll — water company lobbyists. The true cost is closer to zero. Here’s why. 🧵

It’s always the same - privatise the profits, socialise the losses. They spend decades siphoning wealth off-shore and then everyone else has to bail them out so they don’t run any risk.

Keir Starmer could've taken Thames Water back into public hands months ago. Now he's being blackmailed by the only remaining bidder willing to rescue the utility before it runs out of cash at the end of the month. Their terms: don't prosecute our crimes.

Water firms have already said they'll increase bosses' salaries to get around any ban on bonuses. The only way to end the profiteering is to take water out of private hands.

The government bent over backward to hand Thames Water over to KKR. Now they've pulled out and Thames only has cash to operate until the end of the month. Water for 16 million people is now at risk all over a £27,000 donation?

Nobody will buy a UK water company. The current owners have syphoned off money by borrowing against assets, sold all the assets they can, degraded all the assets that remain .. and polluted all the waterways with sewerage dumping. Nobody will buy a UK water company.

Thames Water is a monopoly with 16 million trapped customers. Yet KKR – a predatory private equity firm – doesn't even want to own it. If public ownership isn't the answer and private investors won't invest, then maybe Steve Reed has no idea what he's doing.

“Sources close to the situation told the BBC that the politicisation of the water industry was a major disincentive for investors to put money into the sector.” Customers are scaring multi-billion pound private equity firms off from investing in water. Let's keep it going 👉 takebackwater.uk

A brazen lie from Labour. Private owners of water firms have handed themselves £80 billion in recent decades instead of investing. Did Starmer and Reed really think anyone would believe that they'd suddenly decide to invest £104 billion? www.express.co.uk/news/politic...

Govt confirms criminals control England water industry. "Since the privatisation of water and sewerage companies in 1989, all ten Water and Sewerage companies which discharge into English waters have been convicted of criminal offences". Still allowed to fleece people, no end to criminality.

Thames Water fined £122 million for sewage dumping and shareholder payouts. Industry regulator says customers won't pick up the cost, but where else will the money come from? Our bills – up 31% this year – are their only source of income. We're paying to bail them out.

Ofwat could fine Thames Water enough to put it out of business or revoke its operating licence. These costs will just be passed on to the customer to pay.

💬 "I think that, within the first three months, I did make a difference." Thames Water CEO, Chris Weston, believes he was worth the £185,000 bonus he received for just three months work last year. What do you think? 🤔

Keir Starmer three days ago: "Bonuses for failure? We won’t stand for it." Today: Thames Water bosses may have received £100,000s in bonuses funded by bailout cash weeks ago.

⁉️ What's going on with these bonuses for Thames Water bosses? Keir Starmer is crowing about blocking 'bonuses for failure' after Thames Water halted a bonus scheme for its senior management team. But is this really a sign the government is getting tough on water firms? 🧵👇

Take Back Water @takebackwater.bsky.social · 23/05/2025
Correction: Thames Water halts ONE bosses' bonus scheme. CEO Chris Weston won't get three additional bonuses funded from Thames' emergency £3 billion loan. But he's still in line to make millions from his regular salary and bonus – which we're paying for through our bills.
