Benito is a threat b/c he makes art so alluring and enjoyable you want to understand everything about it and then you end up learning about sugar and slavery and colonialism and the Taínos and Hawaii and then you probably have some thoughts of your own, and that's why art is powerful and dangerous

The work being done by these observers of ICE to document, illuminate, and share what is being done in Minneapolis, in below freezing temperatures, given all that has transpired is so remarkably courageous. They are being killed for that courage, as ICE further reveals their cruelty and cowardice.

I wonder if the Columbia leadership realizes (or cares) how much blowback there might be from *within* the academy. This post, from a Cornell Law professor, is worth reading: 3d.laboratorium.net/2025-07-25-c...
I pledge that I will not provide any service to Columbia University. I will not speak at conferences held at or organized by Columbia. I will not publish with Columbia publications or provide peer reviews for them. I will not provide outside tenure evaluations for Columbia departments. I will not contribute in any way to the institution until everyone who is responsible for this week’s shameful decision has resigned, retired, or been fired, and until Columbia repudiates their catastrophic choice.

In every part of the US, incarceration is out of step with the rest of the world. Even “progressive” states–like California & Illinois–have higher incarceration rates than countries with authoritarian governments. So much for the "land of the free."
Infographic showing that California's incarceration rate (per 100,000 population) is higher than that in Belarus. California's incarceration rate is 494, while Belarus' is 345. Illinois' incarceration rate (per 100,000 population) is higher than that in Russia. Illinois' incarceration rate is 433, while Russia's is 300.

Why must I calculate how worth it it is to save a $1.50 candle based on how many years it will sit in the drawer til next use? 0 - that would be 6 years, too much, throw it out. But a 7?! Just 3 years in the drawer, somehow worth keeping….

The 3Ps of Autocrats:
• Populism
• Polarization • Post-truth

Science and Scholarship in the Crosshairs
Although democratic backsliding affects all sectors of society, scholarship and science are inevitably among its first victims, together with the independent judiciary and critical media. As early as 1942, Robert Merton noted that science requires democracy to flourish and that under totalitarianism “anti-rationalism and the centralization of institutional control both serve to limit the scope provided for scientific activity” (p. 126).10 Within a month of taking power, the Trump administration unleashed what a Nature editorial called an “unprecedented assault on science”.11
Autocratization creates a cascade of systemic risks for science and scholarship. In the extreme case, under a totalitarian regime without dissent, entire disciplines may be at risk of loss and research is confined to a narrow space defined by the rulers. At the same time, as autocratization proceeds, the space for dissent shrinks. Autocratization also imperils health: life expectancy in former democracies that have reverted to autocracy (e.g., Honduras, Nicaragua, Turkey, and Venezuela) has declined by an average of 2 percent compared to countries that preserved their democracy.

When I train on civil resistance, one of the most important distinctions we make is between the popularity of the movement (which is almost always low) and the popularity of the proposition they’re advancing. The protesters themselves are almost never popular—which is totally fine.

That Democrats, even now, insist on focusing on and blaming the progressive wing of their party for Trump is exactly how we entered the Nadir a century ago. White Americans and those who wanted to politically ascend abandoned Black people and oppressed groups to reunite politically with each other.
