You know rough weather is ahead when the monitors go to their bungee cord prisons! We’re still well offshore (see red pin), but should finish surveying and begin a very bumpy transit to Cape Cod Bay ~2pm 🧪🌊 Nor’easter is not ideal, but I am excited for Cape Cod Bay birding while we hide 😂🪶

At shift turnover, the forecast showed 10-15 ft seas for a week starting Wed (see bright red on screen). For now, we have 48 more hours of geo work (sub-bottom profiling, array ops, & maybe coring). We hope the forecast will change. If not, we’ll try to get offshore for more lander ops pre-storm 🧪🌊

After a week of glass seas, the current forecast shows things picking up quite a bit Wednesday/Thursday. We have ~4 days allotted for weather delay in our cruise time just in case seas are too high to safely operate equipment. We’ll see how the forecast looks in another day or two! 🌊

The tail end of last night’s night shift, during which the USGS team was deploying the Seabed Observation & Sampling System (SEABOSS). This instrument grabs sediment samples from the seafloor, and provides us a very cool livestream full of benthic life along the way 🧪🦑
