I’m calling it now. Somebody, an RNLI volunteer, a person in a car or a park or on the street who happens to be brown, is going to be killed by a mob of idiots whipped up by the online rage machine soon. “Understanding their concerns” isn’t good enough. The authorities need to take action.

#OTD John Cowper Powys was b. in 1872. "To read great books does not mean one becomes ‘bookish’; it means that something of the terrible insight of Dostoyevsky, of the richly-charged imagination of Shakespeare, of the luminous wisdom of Goethe, actually passes into the personality of the reader"
An early 1930s portrait of novelist, poet, diarist, essayist and philosopher by his sister Gertrude Mary Powys. JCP born October 8, 1872, Shirley, Derbyshire, England—died June 17, 1963, Blaenau Ffestiniog, Merioneth, Wales. Cambridge educated, he was a university extension lecturer for 4 decades and a passionate advocate for the power of reading

28 March 2024 at night so the sky and water are dark; the green neon provides a striking contrast. A flotilla of swans drifts by a C2C sign. Boats are moored; while the white colour of one in the foreground is distinct, the third in the row is bathed in blue-purple neon light

Ah, lovely to see my chapter on Gray's queer Celticism written up in the Year's Work in English Studies - thanks to the authors and editors! (DM/email me if you're interested in the piece and can't source it in a library)
Kaminski-Jones, meanwhile, revives Gray’s medievalism alongside another longstanding discussion about his sexuality, refreshing work by George Haggerty and Robert Gleckner with new insights into Gray’s Welsh connections. Where in the past ‘The Bard’ has seemed ‘a hirsute epitome of masculine national fortitude, embodying Celtic resistance’, Kaminski-Jones returns to the eighteenth-century reception of Gray’s bardic hero as suspiciously effeminate (at least according to Johnson) (p. 168). Evidenced by the rarefied obscurity and temporal slipperiness of ‘The Bard’, by letters that use Celtic tales to loosen gender distinctions and by later commonplace-book entries constructing Wales as England’s ‘definitional other’, Gray’s Celticism belongs to a transgressive, androgynous, even perverse figuring of Wales against a hardy, hetero-patriarchal England at a time of heightened national self-consciousness (p. 181). Defined by such taste-making commentators as Johnson as a delicate outsider to the publishing mainstream, Gray found in Celtic history and literature a repertoire for representing marginality in ways that correspond to our modern understanding of queer experience and expression.

"excessive grief" leads to a restless sleep for the dead. Not sure who gets to determine what excessive grief is, or even what it means. Too deep? Too long? Too visible? Too inconvenient? This powerful ballad can stand alone without the need for moralising 🧵 2/2

Later commentators were unable to resist interpreting this ancient ballad through a homiletic lens claiming that the already wealthy mother had no need to send her sons overseas to make more money. Her greed therefore led to their deaths. A more common claim is that ... 🧵1/2

In one of the starkest Child ballads a mother's lamentations summon her dead sons home. But the reunion is with revenants & terrestrial time is short: ‘The cock doth craw, the day doth daw, The channerin’ worm doth chide; Gin we be miss’d out o’ our place, A sair pain we maun bide.’ #WyrdWednesday
To paraphrase: Before the cockerel crows at daybreak, the grave worms scold the revenants to return, not to their former life but to the tomb. If they remain above ground or accept any mortal foodstuff the punishment will be bleak. In this illustration, an elderly woman looks up imploring at three spectral images who are turning to leave. The viewer can see the night sky through the window and a candle burns as precious time passes.
'The Wife of Usher's Well' forms part of the Child collection, 305 traditional ballads anthologised by F.J. Child and published in 1860 🎨 Henry Matthew Brock's lithograph in 'A Book of Old Ballads' Ed. Beverley Nichols (1934).

Harvest home: “The farmer paid his men starvation wages all the year & thought he made it up to them by giving that one good meal. The farmer did not think so, because he did not think at all, & the men did not think either on that day; they were too busy enjoying the food & the fun" #BookWormSat
Despite her reputation for being a 'cosy countryside' writer, here Flora Thompson exposes the underside of the rural idyll in 'Lark Rise To Candleford' (1939) 🎨 George Clausen 'Winter Work' (1883–4) oil on canvas. Men, women and children literally scrape their subsistence from frost-locked furrows, working land that belongs to others. Their share of any bounty, even earlier in the year, such as at harvest time, is minimal

“It was a sumptuous, oh, truly sumptuous autumn day, all Byzantine coppers and golds under a Tiepolo sky of enamelled blue, the countryside all fixed and glassy, seeming not so much itself as its own reflection in the still surface of the lake" John Banville 'The Sea' (2005) #BookWormSat
