And my honest opinion – Claude is useful in the same way as an IDE and code completion. It makes a good developer faster, but it doesn’t make a senior out of a junior, and it only increases the amount of damage a poor developer can do to a project.

For reference I use Claude when I code, and if you burn enough tokens it’s absolutely useful – but we’re not yet in the bait-and/switch part of the enshittification cycle. VC cash is only going to pay for my unit tests for so long.

There are similarities in the true believer and those claiming ”a new paradigm” (it never is), but the difference is that this one is being pushed with the help of weaponized grift.

Lack of helmets, lack of shields, fantasy armor, madly running at the enemy because why not, double handing axe and sword, no bling, no color, weird face paint. Did I miss anything? 😭

I’ve done my share of traveling for work, but last week’s cabf F2F being hosted at the Austrian parliament was probably peak fancy.

One more week until OpenSSL in Prague, and I’m doing my first panel discussion at a major conference. What will I wear? 😭

It’s for the same reason I’d rather hear an amateur badly playing a piece they love live than listen to slop. Culture is about communication, a sharing of ideas, feelings and sensations between people, not just filling a void with artifice.

I hate the term, because it’s a marketing invention. It’s not ”hallucinating”, because that implies sentience, which is their way of twisting that the statistical model is not complete enough to find a correct response into something bad-but actually-good.

8. Reuse a popular template: enshittification. 9. Go for broke, with the aim of making companies reliant on subscribed services while fully controlling the information sphere. 10. ? 11. Profit

6. Tech bros pivot – instead of fiefdoms, why not just take over society? 7. Enter another round of money, influence and grift, this time pumping money into AI, with GPU manufacturers backing now that they can unload their stock into another scheme.

5. Crypto currencies (and fucking NFTs) remain in the domain of separating the gullible from their cash. The ones making mint are the GPU manufacturers. 6. Air is going out of crypto currencies, GPU manufacturers reel in the face of having tons of unmovable stock.

3. Crypto currencies are realized. Tech bros leverage the powers of money, influence and grift in promoting them with the ambition of creating independent fiefdoms outside of society. 4. Fiefdoms fail because it's stupid.

How we ended up where we are today: 0: A bunch of proto-tech-bros read Cryptonomicon. 1: A bunch of proto-tech-bros make millions based on being in the right place at the right time, convince themselves themselves of their inherent superiority. 2. Tech-bros decide that society doesn't deserve them.

I keep repeating this: it’s a statistical model telling you what you want to hear. Whether that information is in any way quantifiably correct or not is irrelevant.

Funny how much I miss phone catalogs. I used to be able to simply look up an unbiased listing of all plumbers in my area. Now the only search method is SEOd beyond usability, and the only way to find someone is word-of-mouth.

I went into parenting thinking about my own childhood and swore to be the best parent ever. Wakeup call when it turns out that my kids are actually not little clones of myself, and have their own sets challenges and experiences entirely separate from my own. It was a good lesson in humility.
