What is the case for allowing this besides the "wisdom of the crowd" which seems to actually be "fleece the crowd with last minute insider bets"? If it was only seperating rich people from their money I would be less worries but it seems to be the opposite.

I suppose they have value in revealing the "herd opinion", provided the market has sufficient depth. Since people pay to participate, one might assume their input is sincere and carefully considered. Marketers and politicians, for example, might find this information useful.
