Bergson’s view of memory has largely been lost in recent philosophical discussion Doudja Boumaza is at the Palace today, with a strong case for bringing him back! #philsky #philscisky

If the brain doesn’t store memories, where are they? Why do we summon the past into the present? Henri Bergson explored these questions. Doudja Boumaza (Grenoble) is at The Memory Palace today encouraging us all to revisit Bergson’s answers. Enjoy! open.substack.com/pub/thememor...

Slightly embarrassed that I already can't remember what Bergson's memory argument was, possibly because we're 100 years on and I dismissed it as 'interesting in its time'.

If I recall correctly, Will Durant — the great populariser of philosophy (The Story of Philosophy, The Pleasures of Philosophy) in the mid-century US — was a proponent of Bergson’s thought.

He was right, he just didn't have the physics for it. Landauer says that information has mass. That requires that experience physically change us. The why is to feed the predictive engine. The how is something Church and Turing worked out a while ago Fields is where, Papouin recently as well

Bergson’s main idea was very dumb but he had a lot of other great ones.

A Hofstadter statement! (A pragmatic aside on what gets remembered… it helps to be favorably considered in Russell’s book).
