These guys built their entire careers by getting ratio-ed on Twitter. Singal, Yglesias, and many others would get massive boosts by purposefully saying inflammatory things in a way they knew would lead to massive reactions. This grew their audiences. Not having that destroys their relevance.

Blocking people here is far more effective than it ever was on Twitter. This means that rage inducing content is less likely to overwhelm your feed and you are overall less likely to see it. This has its costs, but it also is an important mechanism from preventing ratio-marketing.

And if one of those costs is that Bluesky never becomes as large as other social media sites, maybe that's a good thing as long as there's a sustainable level of people/activity here.

I block much more freely here than I did on Twitter. I honestly don't understand much about ratios or algorithms. (I'm... well, old). I just know I don't want to replicate my Twitter experience of getting caught in infinite loops of negativity, anger, and snark.

I subscribe to a handful of MAGA lists and there is literally none of their fascist dreck in my feed. It’s amazing. And Bluesky isn’t trying to push them in at any point.

I think this is the bigger thing. For some reason, people here just block and move on. There’s not the anger or the need to yell at the person like happened on the other place. Not sure what changed here, but it works and it’s much better.

There is also a culture here in which people have learned to block instead of engage. It often goes more viral to announce blocking than it does to ratio a “main character.” This again reinforces the issue they face. Which thus makes hanging with Nazis more attractive in the end.

I think this is the most important (tactical) point. Many folk would like Bluesky’s blocking to behave more like Twitter’s.. but won’t concede this means more rather than less conflict (drama). 🤷🏾

Honestly I see no downsides to the Nuclear Block. It makes social media usable again, and it’s great.

Indeed. I've been blocked a few times for what I thought were unfair reasons, which stings a bit, but I still greatly prefer BlueSky's strong blocking tools and our culture that encourages "block on warning" to any of the other major social media systems.
